Why decimated kelp forests affect gray whales, too 06/13/2024

OSU's Lisa Hildebrand joined The Jefferson Exchange last week to discuss new findings on the health of kelp forests in Oregon's coastal waters. 🌊

The recently published paper shows that forests have been decimated by purple sea urchins, munching away on the leafy greens, with no predators in sight. Many creatures depend on healthy kelp forests, including gray , and this is impacting their food source. 🐋

“Most people don’t realize that dragonflies start their life as larvae on the riverbed, and then emerge from the water to become flying insects.”

Rahiza De Thomas uses traps to collect benthic samples—a hidden world referring to the floor bottom level of any body of water. She began studying benthic animals during her bachelor’s degree program on her home island of Puerto Rico.
