In the commencement address by Steven Jackson, an Oregon State University alumnus, Oregon State University Foundation Trustee, former Beavers football player, star NFL running back and philanthropist, he said: "No matter how good you are, no one player can win a game alone. It takes everyone... and that's why the people around us are everything. I truly believe that our purpose lies not only in what we do for ourselves but in what we do and how we are to the people around us."

We congratulate our Class of 2024 grads and welcome them among OSU's more than 200,000 alumni.

On May 30, we experienced an at-capacity crowd for our first ever “Believe It: An Evening with OSU Faculty” event at the stunning Amaterra winery in Portland’s West Hills. With great food and wine in hand (and a nod of appreciation to OSU alumnus Matt Vuylsteke, ’99, Amaterra’s general manager and winemaker), we heard a university update from President Jayathi Murthy and listened to six “lightning talks” from Oregon State University faculty on areas ranging from artificial intelligence to insomnia, snowpack to plankton, and more!

Thank you to those who participated in this pilot event. Special thanks to the faculty who shared how they’re tackling some of the biggest issues facing the planet: Iván Carbajal, Jessee Dietch, Jessica Garwood, Mark Raleigh, Steve Ramsey and Matt Robinson. And, we’re grateful to Vice President for Research Irem Tumer and Director of Transdisciplinary Research Julie Risien for their partnership in making this event possible and for their support of these outstanding faculty researchers.

We plan to continue to host these engaging events with OSU faculty in Oregon, Washington and California, where 70% of our alumni and donors live, during the remaining three years of our $1.75 billion Believe It fundraising and engagement campaign.

“We are at the point in our campaign where we are focused on meeting as many new folks as we can,” said Shawn L. Scoville, OSU Foundation CEO and President. “We won’t meet our goals in support of the university’s ambitious agenda without you.”

A collaboration co-led by an Oregon State University chemistry researcher Xiulei "David" Ji is hoping to spark a green battery revolution by showing that iron instead of cobalt and nickel can be used as a cathode material in lithium-ion batteries.

Thank you to those of you who joined the Oregon State University community for the annual Faculty Excellence event this week; it was a full house with more than 225 guests in attendance, demonstrating the importance of our outstanding faculty to the entire OSU community.

In addition to acknowledging faculty who are members of our nation’s highest academies, we were delighted to celebrate our two newest University Distinguished Professors Todd Palmer in nuclear science and engineering and Malgorzata Peszynska, the Joel Davis Faculty Scholar, in mathematics. We also honored 22 new holders of endowed faculty positions. These honorees were celebrated at a pre-reception where they, for the first year, received medallions from the OSU Foundation in recognition of their endowed positions. As our CEO and President Shawn L. Scoville said at the event, they are encouraged to wear their medals at this annual celebration and whenever they “robe up.”

The OSU Foundation is proud to co-sponsor this annual event with the Office of the Provost. Executive Vice President and Provost Edward Feser emceed the event and noted that our faculty members are leading scholars in their fields, inspiring teachers in the classroom, mentors of graduate students and partners with communities and decision makers in public and private sectors across Oregon, the nation and the world. In her closing toast, President Jayathi Murthy said it best: “Great universities do not exist without outstanding faculty.”

OSU Athletics were the catalyst for how fourth-generation Beaver Denver Pugh, ’97, first formed his connection with Oregon State University. “When it came time to think about college, it wasn’t a question for me. I knew I was going to Oregon State," said Pugh, now a donor and member of the OSU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

He added, “There’s a huge need for athletics, not only for relationship building and for the morale of the school – to have an identity and something to get behind – but to provide an education to student-athletes that they can bring to future careers. It’s also important to support athletics now so that we preserve all it has to offer future generations.”
