Student Spotlight 🔍: After high school Joel had decided his life plan. He was going to work, make a living and that was that. Then he met Jesus through his older brother and Jesus was able to convince him to try college for a quarter. He had a good relationship with (who worked for us at the time) and Adan helped him through his mother’s death and introduced him to a now good friend of his . Through the book vouchers, the field trips, the events and getting hired by the Outreach Office Joel has deeply connected with our Men of Color program. Of our services Joel says,”It’s like survival.” Thank you Joel for choosing us to help you through your journey at De Anza College.

Life is precious. Don’t let anybody tell you it isn’t. So while you have breath in your lungs do something good with it. Kobe was more than a basketball player. He inspired so many to achieve things they thought were beyond their capabilities. With his Mamba Mentality he conquered the NBA and was beginning to dominate sports media with his films and film company. Time and time again we saw him rise above all opposition to success, showing us the way. This is a day I will personally remember as one of the saddest in my life as I grew up idolizing this man and watching his greatness. And to his daughter Gianna, it’s so tremendously sad that her life ended so young. 13 is too young, for anyone. A whole life full of experiences taken away from her. In wake of this tremendous tragedy of death coming too soon, I hope this serves as a reminder that this all ends someday. I hope that if you haven’t already, tell those around you that you cherish and love that you love them and appreciate them. Bring them in for a big hug, show them that you care about them before you no longer can. Rest In Peace to all those that perished today.

Martin Luther King Jr.. A man that looked tyranny, racism and segregation in the face and fought it with his words and actions and ultimately his life. A man who rose above those who sought to harm him and his family. A man who we should aspire to emulate in our own lives. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day everyone.

We underwent vast changes over the last summer session and fall quarter. We moved to a new office and we lost a counselor. Due to this many of our students fell through the cracks.
