🎉Happy Birthday, Marcus Brown! 🎉
Today, we celebrate Marcus, who has spent the last 20 birthdays behind bars. We believe that no one should have to spend another birthday in prison due to unfair sentencing.
At TWCUYC, we are committed to continuing our advocacy for Marcus and others who face injustice. Let’s keep fighting until Marcus is free to celebrate his birthdays where he belongs—at home.
Department of Justice published their findings after investigating the five youth prisons in Texas. The results are horrifying, citing excessive use of forces, neglect and abuse.
Lioness organizer, Neyala Thomas, can be quoted regarding her time in Texas youth prisons as saying “If parents did the things the laws in there did to me and the other kids, they’d be in jail.”
Support the campaign and let’s shut these facilities down. Children need

Independence Day often evokes warm feelings, but the reality is that “liberty and justice for all” remains a promise unfulfilled for many. Injustices persist, and various forms of modern-day slavery continue to affect communities. At TWCUYC, we are committed to addressing these realities and advocating tirelessly until every individual experiences true equality and justice.

Shawn had the honor of joining Dr. Opal Lee’s Walk for Freedom this morning! At 97, Dr. Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” continues to inspire us with her dedication to making Juneteenth a national holiday and advocating for equality. Her walk symbolizes the ongoing fight for freedom and a more equitable world. Thank you, Ms. Opal, for your unwavering contributions. Let’s keep supporting those making positive strides!
Happy Juneteenth from TWCUYC! This photo is of our Co-Founder, Sade Wright’s ancestors, Green and Fannie Brown, in 1865. The Brown family were among the first to establish their home in Lincolnville after being notified that they were “free” in 1865. Juneteenth marks the “end” of slavery in the United States and is a reminder of how far we’ve come and the work still ahead. Many of us still feel enslaved as the system built to destroy us is still working. Together, we have the power to create change. Get involved in activities that make a positive impact in our community.

I had an amazing time representing at the 2024 Convening last week! It was a wonderful experience connecting with so many inspiring attendees. I’m excited about the potential collaborations that lie ahead!

We hold the keys to the solutions!
At TWCYUC, we believe in the power of community partnerships to create a greater impact. We’re proud of our connection with Lioness Justice Impacted Women’s Alliance and grateful for their tireless efforts. Shawn had the pleasure of meeting some of their incredible members for the first time, and reconnecting with others, at the Convening. It was a reminder that collaboration is key. The community needs us to work together. We look forward to doing great things with Lioness. Thank you, Lioness, for all that you do!
We are NOT defined by our records!
Shawn is having a great time connecting with attendees at the Clean Slate Initiative’s 2024 Convening. The (CSI) is dedicated to creating a future where everyone can move past their criminal records and achieve their full potential. By advocating for policies that automatically clear certain records, CSI aims to remove barriers to employment, housing, and education.
Despite the progress made, there’s still much work to be done. Currently, the passing of CSI legislation does not assist with slate cleaning for those with violent crime convictions. This is a significant issue as many individuals in marginalized communities are affected by these types of convictions, further perpetuating cycles of disadvantage.
We encourage everyone to get involved and support the Clean Slate Initiative. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive society where everyone has a fair chance at a fresh start.
