Friendly Climate Science Workshop, Wed, Aug 14, 7pm
To make a difference, we first must understand what’s happening. So, let’s get more of us comfortable with the basic science of our heating planet. Come join the next evening session of the Friendly Climate Science Workshop. It’s being held at the Plano Carpenter Park Recreation Center Wed Aug 14, 7pm. Sign-up at tinyurl.com/FCSWorkshop. Plano Parks and Rec requires registration, but the workshop is free.
Please share this announcement with your networks! Sign-up and ask a friend to do the same!
Not everyone has the time to do a deep dive into climate science, but most of us can invest an hour or so to get more comfortable with the basics so that we can better trust those who have committed their careers to scientific processes and discovery. The workshop is intended to provide resources and encourage more productive conversations on this topic. Attendees will receive a free copy of “The World’s Littlest Book on Climate – 10 Facts in 10 Minutes about CO2”. If we all start working in the same direction, we can make progress on a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable, and more prosperous North Texas, United States, and World for the 21st century and beyond.
Join us on Saturday, August 10 from 10-noon for two presentations! For more info, visit: https://ntreg.org/events.html
Presenter 1: Ananya Chakravarthi, Contestant/Finalist, Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair
Presentation 1: "Optimal Thermoregulation Strategies For Building Roofs"
Presenter 2: Tony Robinson, President, Axis Design Build, Inc.
Presentation 2: "Resource Economics & the Language of Business"
About Presentation 1:
Ananya's study investigated heating and cooling mechanisms of building roofs through experimental testing and modeling. She hypothesized an optimum operating point exists for minimizing heat absorption while maximizing heat convection and radiation.
Experiments were conducted on a model home with various roofing materials and coatings in a controlled environment. Simulations were performed to study different heating mechanisms. Results showed impervious layers blocking convective cooling were less efficient than expected. A porous cover on the roof offered the best performance. Simulations highlighted the importance of radiative and convective cooling mechanisms in preventing excessive heating.
About Presentation 2:
In the fields of Resource Economics, Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability, we talk most often about efficiency using quantities that are defined by units of energy such as kilowatt-hours, cubic feet of air, tons of CO2, and so forth. However, it’s also important to discuss these issues in the "language of business". We need to convert these ideas into terminology of money and finance so we can reach a wider audience.
In the field of Energetics in Physics, there is an Energy Return on Energy Invested ("EROEI"). Just as important in the field of Economics there is a Financial Return on Money Invested (FROMI). In this presentation, we will discuss the development of a language that can bridge the two fields and help clarify the fundamental relationship between both.

Thank you for this important report. The cause is not that complicated. We keep increasing the concentration of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere and the atmosphere traps more heat. Today we have the technology available to stop increasing the concentration of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere, we just need to get on with it. For the sake of our grandkids, let’s get on with it. Because later is too late.
