Grades 3-7th
We are so excited to share our 2024 Ear-Reading Book Club selection! 🤗 Please join other students as we read The Magician’s Elephant by Kate DiCamillo. This book is targeted for students in grades 3-7, but can be enjoyed by those who are older or younger. This title is available on Audible, Bookshare, and Learning Ally. You can also buy this book on Amazon and read it together as a family. It is slightly less than 3-hours in audio-format.
Ear-reading is reading using audiobooks or similar text-to-speech software. Students with dyslexia need exposure to vocabulary at a much higher level than what they can often read. Ear-reading helps bridge that gap. With audiobooks, students can take in the same books that their peers are reading—just in a different format. Ear-reading and eye-reading are both important. They both require practice. The rule-of-thumb is if your child is reading less than 95% of the words on a page correctly, that selection may be better for ear-reading. Anything less can be a struggle and take the joy out of reading. This is also a great way for our kids to learn to use and practice using their accommodations.
We request that you finish the book and plan to join us for our book club meeting via ZOOM on October 13th at 4:00pm (CST). Please sign up using the link below.
Please let your student know they can participate at their comfort level. A list of questions will be sent out, but we mostly will want to know if the student enjoyed the book, their favorite characters, and their favorite parts of the selection.
This book club is meant to be fun and encourage our kids to enjoy books. This isn't school or another homework assignment, but a way to get our kids together so they can practice their accomodations and learn they are not alone in their challenges.
