Did you know that the Connector Project operated by Austin Street Center provides FREE rides for over 3,000 individuals annually experiencing homelessness?

Passengers are taken to locations such as Parkland Health, the Social Security office, Food Stamp office, The Salvation Army, and more.

This June, the Connector had the highest number of passengers for the 2023-2024 year due to the summer heat and we thank these local partners for funding this important initiative that helps the homeless get back on their feet:

Austin Street Center is excited to be featured as this month's Local Spotlight for First United Bank!

During July, bank visitors can peruse this booth to learn about our shelter and how we meet the basic needs of the homeless.

We’re also grateful for First United's partnership as they volunteered to transport cots for our inclement weather shelter this past winter and provided financial literacy classes and lunch service to our clients.

Austin Street is thrilled to announce that we will be adding 20 additional beds for women in our general shelter next month! The additional beds are part of our plan to expand capacity, with a total of 60 new beds added for men and women through the end of the year.

Thanks in part to a gift from Lyda Hill Philanthropies, the new beds will mark a 14% increase in shelter capacity. This scaling of operations is critical as the shelter has been at or near capacity since January. We are so grateful to our community for supporting our mission!

Special shoutout to these incredible 8th graders from Mabank Junior High School who hosted a Socktober sock drive for our clients! They not only delivered their generous donation but also took the time to learn about the shelter during a fascinating orientation and tour.

Their curiosity and manners impressed everyone, with teachers saying the 🧦 drive was well worth it to provide the students with this education and exposure.

At Austin Street, we serve the whole person, develop innovative solutions for housing, and identify efficiencies to solve the issue of homelessness through local partnerships. Founded in 1983, Austin Street Center is an emergency shelter that serves men ages 45 and older and women age 18 and older. Each individual who finds shelter with us is provided a place to sleep, showers, clothing, and meals. Austin Street Center provides safe shelter and basic needs to help each man and woman we serve find a permanent place to call home.
