Spent the morning helping Andrew Brinker and team catch and tag turtles as part of the Trinity River Turtle Survey. This large Snapper was the prize of the day, proving we do have monsters in the water!
Wild DFW at Native Plants and Prairies Day
Saturday, May 4, 10 am to 1:30 pm (event goes until 3 pm)
Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake
521 East Lawther Drive, Dallas, TX
I've been with Native Prairies Association of Texas https://texasprairie.org/ for nearly 20 years. NPAT, along with Dallas Chapter - Native Plant Society of Texas https://www.npsot.org/chapters/dallas/ and North Texas Master Naturalists https://ntmn.org/, were heavily featured in DFW.
So Native Plants and Prairies Day https://ntxnppd.org/ is a certified Big Deal to me. Please come, visit my booth, pick up a Wild DFW copy or get yours signed. Check out my cool $2 Wild DFW armadillo stickers derived from a Fandre photograph.
Special guests at the table, come chat with my good friends:
Wild DFW photographer Daniel Koglin
Kristi Kerr Leonard, & Genie Fritz Texas Buckeye Trail steward
Also catch my Prairies of North Texas talk and slideshow inside the Bath House at 12:15 to 1 pm. Fantastic photos! And some sweet readings from the book's prairie chapter.
Native plant sales (4 vendors!), guided prairie walks on White Rock Lake's rare prairie remnants, and booths from cool nature groups (including the Prairies Association of Texas, Blackland Prairie Chapter https://texasprairie.org/blackland-chapter/).
Alas, I must leave the event early to celebrate a friend's 100th birthday party that afternoon.
Saving stranded fish! Sunday an alert jogger spotted stranded fish on the hike/bike trail at Trinity Park. The river rose over the sidewalk due to the heavy rain. When it receded it left dozens of small fish stranded in puddles on the walkway. With the help of the jogger and another passing hiker walking his dog, Isabel and I (Teresa) managed to get all the fish except the tiniest caught and returned to the river.
Getting a head start on Earth Day yesterday by cleaning the trash brought up by Saturday’s storm. Today the beach is clean, but we are offering a half off special today for paddlers willing to collect trash while the paddle!
They asked me to write about my job:
Where I Work: Her office is the banks of Fort Worth’s Trinity River | Fort Worth Report Teresa Patterson, who rents kayaks and canoes at TC Paddlesports on Panther Island, explains how her job brings her closer to the natural beauty of the river.
Thanks to Andrew Brinker, Tarrant County College (Trinity River Campus) and Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences, we now now we have an incredible diversity of fish life in the Trinity River at the confluence.
Saturday's Cowtown Great American Cleanup volunteers pulled many bags of trash from the Trinity River. Thanks to all our volunteers (like Hollace Weiner) and to the whitewater paddlers of the North Texas River Runners who cleaned the white water drops.
Update: White Rock Lake is reopened, but caution is advised as they have not mentioned any cleanup activities.
White Rock Creek overflowed with 1.5 million gallons of sewage from Plano, officials say White Rock Creek ultimately flows down into Dallas and eventually into White Rock Lake.

Trinity Coalition
The Trinity Coalition is transforming the Upper Trinity River Corridor into a nationally-recognized conservation and recreation area.
The Trinity River originates in North Texas. The Trinity, an 18,000 square mile watershed traversing thirty-eight Texas counties on its journey to Trinity Bay, an inlet to the Gulf of Mexico, provides water to nearly half the population of Texas.
For decades, the river and adjacent floodplain and hardwood forests lay un-used and undeveloped. A rapid increase in the population of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex has increased attention on the River and many development projects are planned that will directly impact the River and surrounding ecosystems.
Trinity Coalition brings balance to development by building, facilitating and promoting recreational use of the River, which, in turn, will promote River conservation.
