Happy May, Eagles! See what's ahead for the month in Mr. Lutken's Sky Watch Report below.
April began with the spectacular Solar Eclipse! Hope everyone had a good view!
Big Thunderstorms and exams are arriving, so get ready for May! Here are some things to look for:
Evening Skies :
Jupiter leads the setting winter stars. In May they'll drop out of sight until they show up in the morning late summer. Spring stars are high: The Big Dipper, Leo, and Arcturus wheel overhead through the night.
Full Moon is on the 23rd.
Morning Skies:
Mars and Saturn are low in the southeast, They'll get higher and more visible this month. The Summer Triangle, Sagittarius and Scorpio rise just ahead of them.
At the Quarry or around town:
Cottonwood seeds are drifting like snow, and Flycatchers are starting to show up over the fields. Watch for Barn Swallows, Herons, Sandpipers, Kingfishers!
Photo is a Common Loon, a beautiful winter visitor. Heâs laughing his head off at something, probably us and all our problems!
Letâs listen to him and get outdoors!! PKL

Happy spring, Eagles! See below for Mr. Lutken's April Sky Watch.
Spring in Texas is off-balance, crazy, and beautiful. It can be hot, dusty, cold, windy, stormy, and sunny all in one day!! Bluebonnets are blooming, birds are arriving and departing! It's an active time of year!
*Total Solar Eclipse* April 8th! It starts around 12:30, totality for 4 minutes around 1:40, and then ends around 2:40! A pinhole in cardboard will project the event on any light surface before and after totality! Be prepared with eclipse glasses and cross your fingers for clear skies!
Evening skies: Jupiter leads the winter stars down in the west after sunset. It's the best time of year to watch the Big Dipper circling the northern sky. Use the pointer stars (the two at the front of the cup) to find the North Star, or follow the arc of the Dipper's handle south to the bright star Arcturus, the Bear Hunter.
Full Moon is on the 25th.
Morning skies: Mars, and Saturn are very low in the east just before sunrise. The Summer Triangle is overhead, coming up earlier every day!
Quarry : Lots of bird activity right now: Ducks, Swallows, Kingfishers, and all kinds of beautiful Herons. Photo is a pair of Little Blue Herons, Quarry visitors one rainy April, years ago!
Head outside and take in the voices of spring. They can help you keep your balance!! PKL

Last week, Peter Lutken visited campus to give his annual Roger Bannister Homily. Read below for his Sky Watch for March!
In February, temperatures ranged from the 20s to the 80s!! That's the back and forth as the seasons change. The days are almost 12 hours long now and will be by March 19th, the Equinox. Spring is just about here!
Evening skies: Jupiter is putting on a spectacular show in the west just after sunset! Go out any clear evening and check it out. The bright winter stars, Orion and company, follow along through the evening. They are high overhead, but set earlier every day. The spring stars, led by Leo, are climbing in the east.
Full Moon is on the 25th. Two weeks later, on April 8th, the New Moon will come between us and the sun. The eclipse in Dallas will be total!! Cross your fingers for clear skies! More on this later.
Morning skies: The Summer Triangle is up in the east before dawn, and The Big Dipper shines out overhead. Follow the arc of the dipper handle to the bright star Arcturus, "The Bear Hunter."
At the Quarry (or in your neighborhood):
Great bird watching right now: Hawks and Ducks of all kinds, Wrens, Cardinals, Woodpeckers....birds are really starting to move as spring arrives.
Redbuds are starting to bloom, and Daffodils are everywhere! Many of us read Wordsworth's poem "Daffodils" in school. Check it out, it's perfect for this time of year!

Full Moon is on the 5th.
Morning Skies: Saturn is up in the southeast before dawn, and Jupiter will arrive to follow by the end of the month! The Summer Triangle is high overhead; Scorpio and Sagittarius are lower in the southwest.
At the Quarry or around any creek or pond: Watch for Barn Swallows, Herons, Sandpipers, Kingfishers! Birds are on the move! Photo is a pair of Little Blue Herons! They come to the quarry this time of year, especially after good rains. The neon blue color is incredible!!

Happy February, Eagles! With February off to a chilly start, see what's ahead for the month in Mr. Lutken's Sky Watch Report below âď¸ !
Ice, Sleet, Thunder, February! Winter isn't over yet, but the 2nd is Groundhog Day. It's the halfway point from the winter solstice to the spring equinox, and the days are getting a bit longer! Here are some good things to look for this month:
Evenings: Venus is low and bright in the west at sundown. Jupiter is not far behind, and will catch up to Venus soon. Theyâll be spectacular together at the end of the month! Mars is up high in the middle of the Winter Hexagon, near Orion and the Pleiades, and if you are out under dark, clear skies you might see the âGreen Cometâ near the Little Dipper. The stars are at their best this time of year!
Full Moon: Night of the 5th.
Mornings: Spring stars dominate. Before sunrise, you can see the Big Dipper and Arcturus straight overhead. The Summer Triangle and the constellation Scorpio are rising in the east/southeast!
Quarry: This is a great month for bird watching! Hundreds of Cedar Waxwings and Robins are all around town, and flocks of wild ducks are still here on area ponds and lakes!
Photo is of a tiny Ruby Crowned Kinglet. It was a cold February day at the Quarry, and he was looking for some company. We had a short, memorable visit about life that day!
Head outside when you can in spite of the weather. Let the cold, fresh air remind you of good times and old friends!! PKL
Happy New Year, Eagles! We hope that your 2023 is off to a great start! Check out what is ahead for the month in Mr. Lutken's January Sky Watch Report below!
Last year was pretty rough: droughts, floods, heat, cold, not to mention the problems around the world that we cause ourselves!! Still, there is plenty to be thankful for, all around us, and everyday. Here are some things to look for this winter...
Evening Skies: Great planets spread across the plane of the ecliptic after sunset! Mars rising in the east, Jupiter and Saturn in the south to southwest. Venus is low in the west.
The Winter Hexagon is in full view most of the night. It includes some of the brightest stars in the sky: Capella, Sirius, Procyon and Rigel. They surround the constellation Orion!!
Full Moon is on the 6th, "Twelfth Night"!
Morning Skies: The Big Dipper is high in the Northern Sky, and the bright star Arcturus is right overhead. Vega, a beautiful summer star, is peeking over the northeastern horizon as the sun comes up!
At the Quarry and around the area: Here's a photo of an Osprey, also called a Fish Hawk. Saw him having lunch on a cold day a while back. Hawks are often spotted in winter as they soar and hunt for prey with their keen eyes!! You never know what you'll see when you spend time outside this time of year. Try it!! Helps you keep your balance!
