Hello Everyone!
We are planning to have a belated book opening for "Dancing at the Crossroads", Mike's last book of poems, which was published last year. Janet Glovinsky, who has an art studio in the Santa Fe (Drive) Art District in Denver, has graciously offered for us to host the reading at her studio. It will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 7pm, at Glovinsky Gallery, 800 W 8th Ave UNIT 116, Denver, CO 80204. And, I certainly hope that some of you would like to read some of the poems from the book.
Thanks!
Claire

Line from @warsanshiree poem HOME. This song suddenly came back to me when I saw the Greek migrant boat tragedy post (second image) by @middleeastmatters & @feminist My children sang Requiem by @elizagilkyson in their school choir after the tsunami in 2005. Here, today it comes back to me and stops me in my tracks. However you are holding this space …
“Mother mary, full of grace, awaken
All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken
Taken by the sea
Mother mary, calm our fears, have mercy
Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy
Hear our mournful plea
Our world has been shaken
We wander our homelands forsaken“
Eliza Gilkyson From @glblctzn piece about @warsanshiree “Warsan Shire, a Somali-British writer and poet in her 20s, uses her work to explore stories of escape and journeys. The poem below, entitled "Home", is written from the perspective of someone escaping violence, and losing their home. Not only is Shire a very talented writer, this poem is also a powerful answer to common claims that asylum seekers are moving for economic reasons, or because they just feel like it. The majority of the Syrian people who have attempted to enter Europe in recent months were legitimately fearing for their lives, and felt like they had no other choice.” From @warsanshiree poem HOME
“you have to understand,
that no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land
no one burns their palms
under trains
beneath carriages
no one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck
feeding on newspaper unless the miles travelled
means something more than journey.
no one crawls under fences
no one wants to be beaten
pitied” 07/04/2023
