Michael Warren Contemporary

Contemporary art with emphasis on materials and process At Michael Warren Contemporary, we showcase contemporary artwork that speaks to us personally.

We present colorful abstract and figurative work alongside contemplative sculpture, installations, works on paper and photography with particular emphasis on materials and process.

We're excited to celebrate work by Jennifer Bain in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. "Last Call", 36"x48", acrylic on clayboard. DM for details. Many of her works have developed over years with up to 100 layers of paint. Her dedication to the environment was reinforced over the years in her CA studio, which she refers to as "the tree house." Now living and working in Santa Fe, she records the weathered landscapes that are illuminated in magical ways that are a familiar experience in the Southwest.

We're excited to celebrate work by Tina Suszynski in this iteration of the tenth anniversary exhibits. Tina Suszynski captures the tiniest of details. Her porcelain sculptures (both freestanding and wall relief) explore the complexity and beauty of the plants around us. Her process is tediously slow - starting with drying the plants, then surfacing them with the porcelain paper clay (dipping, spraying, brushing), letting them dry, firing them, then reinforcing the structure with more clay and additional firings, combining elements until the final sculptures are complete. DM for details.

"Harlequin Evening" 58"x64" by Andrew Roberts-Gray, oil and mixed media on linen. DM for details.

"Trace 0712" (detail image) 30"x22", by Etsuko Ichikawa. Etsuko explores elements of nature in an alluringly elegant way. It's mesmerizing to watch her work - it's a bit of a cross between a choreographed dance and big brush calligraphy. She uses molten glass to draw on the surface of the paper; and when she pulls the glass off, she's left with gestural, diaphanous marks that bear witness to a fleeting moment in time.

We're excited to celebrate work by Angela Faris in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. We love this series that Angela captured using old expired (like 35 yrs expired!) Polaroid film. We're not the only ones; in the last week, we sold 4 works to visitors from 3 different states!

We're excited to celebrate work by Jennifer Bain in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. Jennifer creates tight compositions with formal structure and separately weathered surfaces with flat planes of color overl layers and layers of mark making. Her placement of birds challenges us to look for meaning in the abstraction. DM for details. "New Voice", 30x30, acrylic on clayboard.

06/29/2024

We're excited to celebrate work by Jody Guralnick in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. "Inflorescence" triptych, 60x144, oil on 3 panels. DM for details. This spectacular work would soften a contemporary space and, paradoxically, would provide an edge to a more traditional home.

Jody Guralnick is intuitive in her approach to investigating the symbiotic relationships found in the woodland oasis that she calls home. Guralnick conveys fantastical environments teaming with life in such a way that viewers recall their own fascination with nature. This facilitated response advocates for stewardship of the environment.

We're excited to celebrate work by Andrew Roberts-Gray in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. Andrew's decades-long exploration of the history of art coinciding with industrial advances leading into technology. Each of his paintings is embedded with so many layers of information established through a variety of techniques.

06/27/2024

We are excited to celebrate work by Trey Hill in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. Trey's dedication to the work of the hand is evident in his clay sculpture. The series of tree-like forms are made by hand and range in size up to about 9 ft. This beauty is called "Lush" and is 24"x18"x9" including a steel base. DM for details.

We are excited to celebrate work by Margaret Lawless in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. Maggie is methodical in her approach to bringing modern-day relevance to her recreations of work from art history. In her current multi-year project, she is developing 82 panels based on Francisco de Goya's etchings "Los desastres de la guerra" or The Disasters of War. The series of 200-yr old etchings by the renowned painter is recognized as one of the boldest anti-war statements ever made, reminding us of the tragic results of violent conflict. Lawless uses current (5yr) news cycles to highlight the results of economic divides, racial tensions, geopolitical tensions, disease, religion, migration studies and global warming to drive home how illusory civil society really is. This first work in the series of 82, is based on the first etching, known as "sad forbodings of what is to happen"; in it, Margaret uses news about racism - specifically oppression of Blacks.

This is the last week to check out this iteration with Deb Adams-Welles, Robert Brinker, Teresa Booth Brown, Chris Erickson, Elizabeth Ferrill, Pamela Joseph, Marietta Patricia Leis, Mike McClung, Jay Phillips, and Melanie Rothschild. We're truly honored to work with such talented, hardworking artists who, incidentally are great people that we get to call friends. Come see the art and pick your favorites.

Little morning light on these 2 ceramic sculptures by Trey Hill. Come visit the gallery and pick your favorites. The gallery will be open tonight until 9pm for the First Friday Art Walk.

We're excited to celebrate work by Jay Phillips in this iteration of our tenth anniversary exhibits. This oil painting on artificial turf is delightful in so many ways. There is something great about a painting of floor boards made on grass carpet. The fanciful flight of the petals read like an army of sycamore seeds. While graphic, this work is definitely not simple. Come check it out for yourself.

Pluie de Clown #3 by Jay Phillips, 72"x75" oil painting on artificial turf. DM for details

What does a window mean to you? Come by and share your thoughts and pick your favorite of this series by Elizabeth Ferrill.

This work. Seriously.

HiFi 0324 by Deb Adams-Welles, 48x48, silk, linen, leather, velvet, artificial turf, reflective fabric, and felt on panel.

05/31/2024

The paint is so luscious, we can almost taste it; but we won't do that because, well, it's paint. Come check out Paint and Air by Melanie Rothschild.

05/30/2024

Both and explore memory of place through the reductivist lens of color. There is a simplicity that has the ability to tap into universal experience. Come spend time with these works (and others) in our current iteration of the tenth anniversary exhibits.
