Congratulations Cadet Col Evan Lightfoot for completing the requirements for his Spaatz Award today. C/Col Lightfoot is just the 38th cadet in the Delaware Wing to be awarded Civil Air Patrols highest cadet achievement.

🎉 Congratulations to Cadet Evan Lightfoot of the Delaware Air National Guard Cadet Squadron! 🎉

Cadet Lightfoot has achieved the highest honor in Civil Air Patrol by earning the prestigious Spaatz Award, becoming a Cadet Colonel. ✈️ The Spaatz Award is awarded to less than 0.5% of all Civil Air Patrol cadets and represents excellence in leadership, character, fitness, and aerospace education. Named after General Carl A. Spaatz, the first Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, this award is the pinnacle of cadet achievement.

Since joining the program in September 2019, Cadet Lightfoot has made a tremendous impact. He served as Cadet Commander of the DANG Cadet Squadron and will lead the 2024 Winter Tri-Wing Encampment. He was also named the Delaware Wing's Cadet of the Year at the Wing Conference. 🌟

In addition to these achievements, Cadet Lightfoot recently earned his Private Pilot's License through the Cadet Wings Program! 🛩️

Join us in celebrating Cadet Colonel Lightfoot's incredible accomplishments and bright future ahead!

Photos from Delaware Wing - Civil Air Patrol's post 07/22/2024

On 21 July 1942 in the late afternoon, two pilots from the Civil Air Patrol Coastal Base # 2 in Rehoboth Beach were on a routine patrol when they had an engine failure. Upon crashing into rough seas, the observer Lt Charles Shelfus was thrown from the plane and his body was never recovered. The pilot, Henry Cross, suffered a broken back but still alive. Within an hour, Coastal Base # 2 Commander Major Hugh Sharp and Lt Eddie Edwards arrived on the scene in the Sikorsky Amphibian S-39. The first water landing failed, but the second was successful in 8-10 ft swells and they were able to get Cross on board. Upon landing one of the pontoons had cracked and was taking on water and the plane started to list, making it impossible to take-off. To balance the plane, Lt. Edwards crawled out on the framing of the airplane and sat there for eleven hours while Sharp taxied the plane back to Chincoteague, Virginia. The arrived at 11:45 that night with the assistance of a tow from the USCG. All three men survived the ordeal and Cross recovered, but wouldn't be able to fly again. Sharp and Edwards were awarded the Air Medal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for their heroic actions.
The Sikorsky S-39B pictured is the plane that Edwards and Sharp flew for their rescue mission. It now resides at the New England Air Museum.
