Description: “I painted a veteran with his best friend, the dog, to pay tribute to the United States of America by celebrating Veterans Day. I also included the military airplanes for the Veterans Day Parade to show gratitude and pride for veterans. I have always had compassion for those who have served in the military. Fore me, a soldier is a person who is brave and has a big heart. Moreover, this painting honors the mourning of US military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Furthermore, I included the helmet and boots to represent the fallen soldiers who served our country. My painting is to show people the purpose of soldiers, remind them about Veterans Day, and pay respect to those veterans who sacrificed and dedicated their lives for ours.” - Elena Bello

Each year the Young American Patriotic Art Contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Entries must be submitted by March 31. You are encouraged to submit entries to your nearest VFW Post. If your child/student would like to enter next year, more information can be found on the VFW Aux website under the scholarships tab or you can contact the DG VFW directly.

A little late posting pictures but our 2024 Father's Day Breakfast was a great success! Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us celebrate all of the Dad's and Grandpa's! Also, not pictured, but a huge shout out to all of our backstage volunteers who did all of the cooking and cleaning! You are all amazing!

This morning the men treated the "mom's" to a pre-Mother's Day breakfast. Not only did they serve delicious food, but they did a great job with table decor, raffles, and handed out long stem roses to all of the ladies! Thank you to all who volunteered!

Congratulations to the 2024 National Youth Scholarship Winners!!!

High School Junior, Sophia Lin, of Scottsdale, AZ won the first place $35,000 college scholarship for her Voice of Democracy speech. This years theme was "What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?"

Bryan Day is an 8th grader from Ashland, OH. He won the $5000 first place prize for his Patriot's Pen essay on the theme, "How Are You Inspired by America?"

Each VFW individually hosts their own contest. We encourage any and all Jr High and High School students that would like to participate, to submit entries to the Downers Grove VFW by the beginning of Oct. Maybe you could be next years National winner!
