Mary Stowell Art
Minneapolis based abstract artist. Original paintings for sale.
I've been experimenting with watercolors for the last several months now, and I think I'm finally starting to find my way with them. I'm really loving the metallic colors that I picked up last time I went shopping, and have been playing with this abstract sort of dreamy cloud style.
While I'm here, Israel is still killing Palestinians despite the "ceasefire." Committing war crimes. This is a genocide of the Palestinian people. Zionism is violence.
I do not need your support if you support Israel, so I'm not worried about losing people over these statements.
If you are staying quiet about this, you are complicit. Now is not the time to stick your head in the sand. If you are uneducated about this, there's no excuse anymore. Get educated.
Follow independent journalists. Palestinians on the ground. Al Jazeera. There are so many sources other than mainstream Western media.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
I painted with black paper for the first time last night, and I love how it turned out. The metallic watercolors showed up so nicely. I'll definitely be doing this a lot more. ๐
I've been experimenting with watercolors for a while now, and I think I'm finally starting to find my style. I picked up some metallic watercolors and they are GORGEOUS. Here's one of my most recent experiments that I'm pretty happy with.

I've been learning to use my new watercolor pens, and I started a new project last night. More information to come soon!
I decided to pick up some new watercolor pens the other week on a whim. Aside from a watercolor class in high school and a lesson a couple of years ago, it's safe to say I haven't spent a lot of time using this type of paint. I've just been having some fun playing around and getting used to how they work. I'm pretty happy with the results so far!
We're looking for artists to create nine new murals across the Minneapolis park system!
This project will raise awareness of the goals of Parks for All, a new Comprehensive Plan for the Minneapolis park system approved last fall, and help address vandalism at tagging hotspots in the parks.
Each commission pays a $6,000 artist fee + $3,000 for materials. The application deadline is September 19, 2022. Learn more about the project and apply here: https://forecastpublicart.org/call-for-artists-parks-for-all-murals/
I've been home since March 11th, and don't plan on going anywhere soon. I am one of the many at high risk for COVID-19, and this is a particularly stressful and scary time for a lot of us. I haven't done any painting in a long time, and it's always been one of the best ways I've had to cope with stress. I finally got around to rearranging my studio the other week, and now I'm all set up to get some things going. I started some ceramic coasters the other day that I am pretty excited about! Remember to take care of your mental health during this time, too. There are resources out there if you need help.

I will be participating in again this year. will be in Myrtle Beach, SC raising money for Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs. This particular cause is something that matters a great deal to me, so I'm even more excited to be taking part than usual. Since the exhibit is in my home country this year I will be making the trip to see it in person this April, too! If you've never heard of this event, it is really something special. I love textured paintings, and the texture of this mixed media oil painting comes through beautifully in a print. You can get your own print of "Vitality" along with several other paintings on my website now!
Surprise, surprise... I got paint on my forehead. ๐ I just get too excited, and lost in the process of painting that most of the time I end up wearing it, and I'm okay with that.
The sun is shining and the snow is melting! I've been spending as much time as possible outside of my house lately, so I haven't been painting quite as much. This has got to be one of my favorite color schemes. Ocean vibes and glittering gold!
Coming soon... Ceramic coasters! I had a set of twelve blank coasters delivered today, and they will be this week's project. I'm super excited for these!
I donated "Out of the Darkness" to a silent auction for the a couple of years back. It's one of my favorite pours, and now it is available as a print! I have been working with a company to start developing products with prints of my artwork such as jewelry, scarves, notebooks, coffee mugs, phone cases, clothing, socks, hats, shoes, and other accessories. What types of items would you be interested in?
Touching up the backs of some projects while I varnish some others. Finishing touches aren't the most exciting, but the final result is the best part!
The best days are days when my hands end up looking like this. I had some paint on my forehead by the end, too. ๐
I decided to experiment with a wooden serving tray tonight, and I am ridiculously happy with what happened. These colors are perfect together.
Good morning! I've got good news! I finally worked through some of the initial kinks with the printing company that I have been using, and am excited to offer prints again. If you want to buy some of my art for your home/office/anywhere you want to make pretty but aren't ready to commit to purchasing an original, this is the way to go! Follow the link below and check out the different options and sizes that I have available!
Getting ready for something new! I love a fresh canvas.
As I am patiently waiting for my new swipe painting to finish drying, I thought I would share a close up of all these beautiful cells that came through! I'm really digging this color combination. What do you think about these colors together?
This was my first time ever experimenting with a swipe technique. To be honest, I absolutely hated how this looked before I hit it with the torch. Then the magic happened. So many cells came out of what was looking completely flat. I love how this looks now, and the colors are a perfect reminder of summer as mother nature continues to dump snow on Minnesota. What are your feelings/experiences with swiping if you've tried it? @ Minnetonka, Minnesota
Look how gorgeous my baby sister is! I've finally finished editing all of her senior photos, so I'm back in my studio today. I just had to share this with all of you.
Look at all those sparkles! I say it all the time, but I just love using gold. I've been relaxing all weekend. Which is code for watching The Office with Ryan and playing Project Octopath on the Nintendo Switch. ๐ I'm a sucker for RPGs, and I'm really liking this one! Do you have any favorite new games right now?
Our walls are covered in art! This is a fun little corner above our couch. The painting on the right is called "Dauntless," and is ready for a new home! You can purchase it on my website.
More progress from last night! All of the white space is officially covered. I'll be adding more layers on top of this, and am even considering adding some linework after I've finished the the final layers. I'm thinking this needs some more shades of pink and blue. What do you think? @ Minnetonka, Minnesota
My new business cards are in! I'm super happy with the way these turned out.
Here's another wall in our place. It's probably one of my favorites. The fact that Gilmore Girls is on miiight have the tiniest bit to do with it. ๐ Both of these paintings were so much fun to do, and I love pieces that span across multiple canvases. They are both available on my website! So, are there any other Gilmore Girls fans out there?
This is one of the walls in our living/dining room. It's a nice mix of acrylic, oil, and mixed media. All of these paintings are available on my website! It's hard to choose, but I think the oil painting in the center is my favorite. Its simplicity, and blend of colors are so calming to look at. Which one is your favorite?
Getting ready for another layer! I'm having so much fun with this large abstract piece that I'm working on. I love acrylic pours, but I have been missing my brushes. ๐จ
I love this palette! I definitely want a bigger one, though. I always feel so confined to the smaller areas when I'm mixing colors. I suppose it keeps me from wasting paint! I think I am going to try using this palette primarily for oils, and start looking for a new one for acrylics. Any recommendations?
I spent some time this afternoon adding more layers to this abstract acrylic piece. Here's a close-up!
Taking a little break from pours and working on one of my bigger abstract acrylic pieces. I'm a fan of Liquitex Basics, but next time I need to pick up some acrylics I am going to try out Golden. Do you have any recommendations for acrylic paint?
I love customized pieces! This one is extra special. I took the liberty of making this one for our wedding. This is an acrylic pour done with Liquitex Matte Medium on a wooden letter, which I then mounted on a wooden chalkboard that we used for our guestbook. Guests signed it with white and metallic paint pens, and now we can hang it in our home where we are able to see it everyday. ๐
I usually enjoy sleeping in and having a lazy Sunday, but today has had a fair amount of activity. I got up before noon (that's pretty early for the weekend), went out for brunch with my husband, and went grocery shopping. Now I'm relaxing on the couch while I contemplate doing the laundry, putting the dishes away, or continuing my annual binge-watching of Gilmore Girls. ๐ What are your favorite Sunday activities?
More glittering gold! This paint is all mixed up for some ceramic dishes. I'm thinking about experimenting with painting on records, what do you think?

About Me
Iโm Mary Stowell. I am a Minnesota based artist, currently residing in Minnetonka with my incredible husband and our sassy kitty cat. I am passionate, driven, a bit awkward, and an absolute dork. I think and live my life outside of the box.
I have been painting independently since April 2014, and have developed a focus in abstract art. My weapons of choice are both oils and acrylics, as well as different forms of paper collage that I use in mixed media pieces.
My artistic journey began during my sophomore year of high school, and I have since taken classes in oil painting, watercolor, jewelry making, and digital photography. I discovered my love for acrylics and mixed media art in an open studio painting course that I took during my freshman year of college.
In addition to my work as an artist I volunteer as a political activist for Planned Parenthood and as a crisis counselor for Crisis Text Line. Both organizations and their causes are extraordinarily important to me, and I am honored to be a part of the work that they are doing in our community.
