We were heartbroken to learn that Millie Richard started her journey on from this world on Monday afternoon. She was a force for healing and connection in the Hillside and we were honored that she was one of the original Healthy Hillside Team members, guiding our work and inspiring community gatherings around a bonfire. Her work with us and with others in the community has made our world more beautiful, healthy, and connected. We will miss her presence and voice, all of which is so strong many of us still feel and hear it. Our hearts are with her friends and family in this time of transition and grief. As Millie would say whenever we parted ways, acknowledging the temporary nature of our separateness - bye for now.
We want to give a special thank you to Adeline Wright for bringing the community together for such a wonderful event on Sunday evening. We are incredibly honored to have been able to host Gag Me With a Spoon in our Teatro!
Join us today from 2-4pm for a community vision board making! Help us envision a safer and healthier neighborhood by painting, drawing, and imagining what a more connected, resourced, and vibrant Hillside neighborhood could look like.

Over the past 2 years, Zeitgeist has had over 11,000 conversations with Hillside residents about concerns and challenges that lead to health disparities along with ideas for solutions and visions for the future. One of the key themes we heard from the neighborhood is that there is a strong need for more access to better parks maintenance like needle and garbage collection, mowing, and public restrooms.
Voting YES for Duluth Parks tomorrow would restore the Park Fund to the original value voters approved in 2012 by changing it from the fixed flat fee to a percentage of property value allowing the fund to grow as inflation and expenses grow. Losing this funding would go against what we've heard time and again from residents, including our most vulnerable neighbors. They deeply value the parks we have, and want them to be cleaner and safer places for everyone to use. We need to Vote YES for Duluth Parks so we can maintain this valued resource now and into the future.

The entire Zeitgeist Staff and Healthy Hillside Team want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended the SAFER 6TH AVE EAST SUMMIT last Friday! We’re so grateful to our panelists who shared their perspectives about the dangers and negative health impacts of 6th Ave East, background context on what work has been done to date, and what opportunities lay ahead for a reimagined 6th Ave E street. With a crucial mix of voices representing Hillside residents, business owners, city planners, and public health officials, we were impressed with the huge amount of alignment on values and goals – and we were able to collectively agree that neighborhood wellbeing must be a driving priority in revitalizing 6th Ave East. We can not wait any longer to start meaningful change on this street. We look forward to sharing more updates soon on the campaigns that will be arising from this summit! Stay tuned.

We're so excited to introduce our new AmeriCorps VISTA! Meet Thomlin:
Thomlin Swan grew up on the shores of Mahicantuck "the river that flows two ways" (Hudson River) on Lenape land in New York City, and for the last few years has lived at Nahgahchiwanong "where the water stops" (Fond du Lac Reservation) on Ojibwe land in Cloquet, MN. Thomlin is an experimental theatre maker, documentary filmmaker, graphic designer, parent, and somatic therapist in-training. Thomlin is excited to bringing a social justice lens and creative imagination to issues of community wellbeing and resilience in the north woods. Understanding that strong relationships are vital to enacting change, their VISTA work will focus on strengthening relationships between various community groups across the region. Thomlin is thrilled to be joining the Zeitgeist Community Development team this year to help improve 6th Ave E and in the Central Hillside neighborhood of Duluth, using the arts and creative, grassroots community practices to unleash our collective imagining of what's possible.
Welcome to the team, Thomlin!

Our hearts go out to the young victim hit by a vehicle while biking in Duluth’s Hillside neighborhood Thursday evening. Neighbors in this community have repeatedly made requests for stop signs and additional pedestrian safety measures, and had those requests ignored.
These are unacceptable circumstances, and ones that can be prevented.
Join us in letting the Duluth city officials know that they must do better for the residents of the Hillside community and the city as a whole. Visit the link below to voice your pedestrian and biking safety concerns.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those affected by the pedestrian death that occurred this weekend. Whether you're behind the wheel or you're walking, biking, or rolling, mistakes can happen. That's why we MUST create and implement transportation policies and infrastructure that protects pedestrians so mistakes don't end in preventable tragedies.
The lack of safe ped/bike infrastructure combined with traffic speeds over 35 mph and bigger vehicles is a recipe for disaster. This is a public health issue that we can solve.
