Malvern is an outstanding graduate of the 2016-2017 Mentor Connection cohort. We are thrilled to hear he is doing BIG things. Check it out--
When asked if Mentor Connection helped him he said, "Yes, I utilized my networking skills over the summer and my MC mentor, Nate, kept in touch and often advised me before and after my internship. He's amazing!"
Huge thanks to both Malvern & Nate for being part of the program.

This past summer, I did a software engineering internship at Facebook. I was part of the Facebook University for Engineering (FBU) Class of 2017. FBU is an 8-week immersive and hands-on training program that offers experience across engineering, business, and analytics roles to college students of color and those who are historically underrepresented in the tech industry. I first learned about FBU in my freshman year while applying to summer internships. I did not get accepted to the program the first time and was beyond belief when I eventually got accepted, a year later at the end of sophomore year.
The first three weeks of my internship consisted of learning iOS Mobile Development. The last five weeks involved working in a team with 2 other interns to build an app of our choice and finally present it to fellow interns, managers, and rest of the Facebook community.
One challenge that I had during my internship was finding ways to do my best and stay level-headed following a family loss in the middle of my internship that required me to take some time off and go home to be with my family. Sometimes I struggled to be as cheerful as those around me but managed to pull through with the help and support from my CSS fam, friends, manager, fellow interns, and others I met along the way.
Some of my best experiences included networking with full-time employees as well as other interns. I learned quite a lot about the tech industry and was really inspired by the different and unique stories that the people I met and interacted with had to share about their experiences in college and in the tech industry. One of my best moments was dressing up for Corporate Friday at Facebook - a day when you can give up wearing t-shirts or jeans for a more formal attire (most people dressed casually every day). This was the only time throughout summer that I got to wear a suit!
