August 21-22nd 2024 Mending the Sacred Hoop held our DV Good Medicine Symposium this year in Grand Portage.
It was great turnout and we were blessed by many participants who are passionate about this movement..
We also were blessed by a community member Donnie Laquier to bring us to the witch tree and to the bison 🦬 herd that Grand Portage has.
Amazing time and heard a lot of great information.
Good morning, it was a good weekend in Mendota Heights powwow this weekend. We want to say Miigwetch to the powwow committee for the donation money that you gave us for our honoring song that was gifted to the drum that sang for Mending the Sacred Hoop and Minnesota Indian Women’s S*xual Assault Minnesota Indian Women's S*xual Assault Coalitionthis weekend.
We came together to wear our shawls of solidarity for victims of DV, SV and MMIR issues. I’m grateful for Cassandra Rose that volunteered her time at the MSH resource table this past weekend. She working towards connecting to her roots and working with communities in a good way and sharing her beautiful artwork with people(Peggy Flanagan wore a pair not to long ago, not sure how she got them maybe through Holly Cook) and was kind enough to donate a pair of earrings and donated one of her sky collection skirts to help donate funds to mshoop.org for the cause… Which she did on own.
She also helped give an honorarium to the drum and to a family that got to have a family visit for food and drinks…

Healing Through Traditions S*xual Assault Survivors Camp that was held in Grand Portage Minnesota, the space was for Advocates and Program Directors, and community to have a space to rejuvenate, share traditions through handwork, share experiences and listen to people.
We were able to work on Moccasins, zhiishiigwan(rattles), crystal necklaces, and also made medicine bundles for each participant that included our 4 sacred medicines. Sweetgrass, to***co, sage, cedar.
There was also some good teachings that an elder shared with the whole group William Blackwell. He was an elder who was from Grand Portage and brought our group to the Witch Tree so we all could pray for healing.
All participants agreed to have there photos shared and the funds to support this event was provided by these funders.

Happy PRIDE month!
"Mending the Sacred Hoop" is a philosophy gifted by Chief Black Elk. This is a long-term, intergenerational prayer in action gifted to us, the next generations, to continue healing Indigenous communities through storytelling and being good relatives. Mending the Sacred Hoop recognizes and celebrates the spirit of storytelling from our relatives in the Native LGBTQ+, Ally LGBTQ+, and Two-Spirit communities to accelerate ending domestic, sexual, and trafficking violence.
Help us elevate Native LGBTQ+, Ally LGBTQ+, and Two-Spirit voices in the work to end intimate partner and community violence. Have the ears for listening to our beloved family and community members, we stand together through their teachings in love and acceptance.
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH NATIVES (and aspiring allies)!

Hi Friends,
The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) released the historic Restorative Practices Pilot Sites Program Solicitation!
The Restorative Practices Pilot Sites Program is a 60-month funding opportunity seeking to support, strengthen, enhance, and expand existing restorative practice programs that prevent or address domestic violence,
dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking, in accordance with the “restorative practices” definition at 34 U.S.C. § 12514(a)(3), and build evidence for victim-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive restorative practices addressing these harms.
Eligible entities are: 1) Units of local governments, 2) Tribal governments, 3) Tribal organizations, 4) Victim service providers, 5) Institutions of higher education (20 U.S.C. § 1001(a)), and 6) Private or public nonprofit organizations, including Tribal nonprofit organizations and faith-based nonprofit organizations.
OVW will award cooperative agreements to eligible entities that form a partnership of two or more entities that have (1) a demonstrated history of comprehensive training and experience in working with victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking; and (2) demonstrated experience in implementing restorative practices. OVW is interested in supporting communities to enhance or expand current efforts, including an evaluation of the intersection of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and restorative practices. In addition, OVW seeks to fund a range of pilot sites, including sites in various geographic locations with different demographic characteristics; culturally specific, and/or underserved populations; and different VAWA subject areas to be addressed (i.e., domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking). OVW is interested in supporting projects that implement a diverse range of restorative practices, including projects that may have a connection to the criminal justice system, as long as the program is not housed within or administered by a court, prosecutor’s office, law enforcement agency, or any other component of the civil or criminal justice system.
Recipients under this program will receive Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) for the duration of their awards that is tailored to the recipients’ distinct approach to restorative practices in domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking cases. Recipients will be required to collaborate with the evaluator(s) to help develop an understanding of establishing, implementing, and using restorative practices to redress the harm caused by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Our Story
Our approach to address violence against women has always been from a grass root based level that recognizes and draws on the strengths of the community. We apply this philosophy nationally as well in order to help Native programs define their own strengths and build networks with other Native programs in order to identify regional issues and share resources in the work to end domestic and sexual violence. By recognizing and honoring the diversity of Native people locally and nationally, we adhere to our mission statement To End Violence Against Native Women and Children While Restoring the Safety, Sovereignty, and Sacredness of Native Women.
