Where Are They Now? Three Alumni from the Minor in Writing Program Share Their Stories 05/02/2024

WRAC wants to highlight the insightful stories of three MSU graduated students.

Islay Hepburn, Aiden Tomkinson, and Kira Vander Molen, share their own stories on the process of finishing their minor in writing degrees, and how it impacted their lives going forward.

Hey spartans!

Join WRAC in congratulating Dr. Nancy DeJoy, and her community partners, who just received the Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Creative Activity.

Dr. DeJoy, and her partners, will officially receive the award 3/21 at the MSU Outreach and Engagement Awards Ceremony, which takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. The event can also be viewed live on the Michigan State University YouTube channel.

Get ready for the special asynchronous event, Global Digital Humanities Symposium. The first opportunity to attend will be online, from March 18-20, followed by an in-person option from March 22-23.

The four keynote speakers are Rachel Adams, Sara Morais dos Santos Bruss, Alex Gil, and Bill Hart-Davidson.

Thanks to George Mason University, students and faculty at MSU will have the opportunity to attend an upcoming event; “Dialogues in Community Writing”.

Two different events will be offered by the university in the month of March:

March 1st : “Constellating Care in Community Writing” & “Honoring Trans/Crip Tensions in Community Writing”

March 22nd : “How does Community Mean” & “The Communities and Stories that Craft Pedagogy, Methodology, and Theory”

This Monday, February 19th, join us for a discussion, and book signing, from author Bonnie Jo Campbell, who will be showing off her new book release The Waters.

Some of Campbell's previous works include Once Upon a River, Q Road, and critically acclaimed short fiction collections.

Hello Spartans.

For those unaware, MSU is saddened to report the recent passing of Pauline Adams on January 16th. Originally, an MSU professor for nearly 60 years, and the wife of former MSU president Walter Adams; Pauline Adams left quite the impact on WRAC and the university community at large.

April 29 from 3-6 join MSU's Community Writing Center & The East Lansing Public Library for open mic night and showcase entitled "A Place for Poets & Poetry: Poetry's Place in Public Libraries."

Participants can socialize with attendees, share their original poetry, share a poem from another poet, share a short bio about a poet who's work inspired them, share a brief reflection about the way a poem has impact them, and share a piece of artwork that spotlights a poetry or poem!

This event will be held at The Meeting Room in East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road.

Our student spotlight this week is on Gabriel Sandoval, a third-year student majoring in Professional and Public Writing (P2W) and Comparative Cultures and Politics in James Madison College.

He was nominated for a 2022 Truman Scholarship for his outstanding leadership skills and record of public service, making him an impressive representative of the ways in which P2W can prepare students for futures in a wide variety of areas.

During this class, you will: Analyze real publications that might publish your work, write pitches for those publications, learn to query articles and stories at those publications, talk about branding and other business skills of freelance writers love this course, and students do too.
