Tandem Strength & Balance has a client participating in these Winter World Master Games in Italy. Six years ago she considered putting a stair lift in her house and was falling frequently. She is now 83 and competing in downhill skiing (slalom, giant slalom and super G) We are all so proud of all of her hard work and dedication. Go USA!

On my mom’s 80th birthday, she announced, “I won’t be mopping the floor anymore on my hands and knees. I will be using a mop!” She felt great satisfaction in caring for her home and she was hilarious. But her statement was an indication that getting up and down was more difficult. We ALL lose strength when we are ill/hospitalized, but we also lose strength when we stop exercising or just take a “break.” However, those consequences are significantly greater for older adults because leg weakness decreases their safety and mobility.
- One day of bed rest = 6% muscle loss!
- Exercise stops = muscle loss starts within 3-5 days!
- A 4 week “break” of exercising = 32% loss maximum strength!

Leg weakness limits mobility more than any other diagnosis. In fact, leg strength can overcome many “typical symptoms” associated with a diagnosis. For example, a person living with Parkinson’s who has strong legs, can more easily pick up their feet and not shuffle. Success with Tandem Strength & Balance
Gene, at 94, enjoyed golfing and unfortunately one day, he fell while on the course and broke his hip. His rehabilitation included nursing home and homecare physical therapy and when Medicare was terminated, Gene was living independently in his town home and walking with a rolling walker. However, he had fear of stairs and had stopped driving because of the difficulty of getting in and out of his car.
Gene longed to get back to playing golf and resume his independent lifestyle. He contacted Tandem Strength & Balance and following 6 months of strength training, Gene regained his functional leg strength. He was able to walk without any assistive device, no longer in need of his rolling walker or even a cane. Gene was confident and began to drive again. Because of his commitment to strength training, Gene is enjoying his independent lifestyle once again, driving to community activities and playing golf.
