Today, the future of our county spoke. Four PREE H20 students from EPCC and utep_miners and their supervisor used their summer research to talk to us about the future they want to see here in our community. Tree-lined streets, native landscaping, native plants, and a safe environment for our animal neighbors.

They discussed wanting different career opportunities in zoology and botany, the importance of conservation, and how to change our minds about water. Rather than seeing flooding as an issue, it can be an opportunity to harvest and nurture our parks and neighborhoods.

When we have people- especially young people- speak up at Commissioners Court, it gives us the ability to make changes that benefit everyone. Green infrastructure became a major topic during the rest of our session. And I was able to advocate for $1 million to be added to the potential GO bond list just for native trees and plants.

The more we hear from you, the more we can do our best to create the El Paso County we all deserve. Thank you to these students for coming in today.

Independence Day is really about justice. Our ancestors stood together and secured justice and liberty. Today, we must similarly stand up and stand together when we see injustice. Injustice for one is injustice for all. Treasure our independence, our liberty and our democracy, but don’t take them for granted.

Happy Independence Day!

What’s more essential than water?

On Monday, our community showed up to advocate for first-time water and wastewater projects in Northwest El Paso County. We heard public comment from Canutillo residents and a Montana Vista resident who have benefitted from having access to water and sewage. This is what it looks like when our community takes action— community advocacy works.

On this day, 156,000 troops from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom invaded the beaches of Normandy to liberate France during World War II. The largest seaborne invasion in history laid the foundation for the Allied victory on the Western Front.

Without their sacrifice, our world would look very different today. Let’s honor those who bravely gave their lives by upholding their values of truth, justice, and the pursuit of happiness for all.

El Paso County Community Services, through a partnership with EPCC and Humana Insurance, offered free tech classes to our seniors. Thank you to Irene Gutierrez, Rosalva Hernandez, Claudia Jimenez and all our team. Your dedication to public service made this possible.

Congratulations to our first Canutillo graduating class!
