As the Fourth of July approaches, the City of El Paso Animal Services wants to underscore the potential dangers that the holiday festivities can pose to beloved pets. To help pet owners prepare and keep their pets safe, El Paso Animal Services offers the following tips:

• Keep Pets Indoors: The loud noises can frighten pets, leading them to run away. By keeping pets inside, in a quiet, secure area, pet owners are taking a proactive step to prevent them from escaping.

• Create a Safe Space: Provide a designated safe space for pets with their favorite toys, blankets, and a comfortable bed.

• Updated ID: Another essential precaution is to ensure a pet’s microchip information and ID tags on their collars are up to date.

• Get Microchipped: If a pet needs to be microchipped, visit ElPasoAnimalServices.org for upcoming free microchipping clinics.

• Avoid Human Food: Holiday foods and drinks can be harmful to pets; alcohol, chocolate, or other toxic ingredients.

• Use Pet-Safe Insect Repellents and Sunscreens: Ensure any insect repellents or sunscreens used on pets are specifically designed for them.

• Be Mindful of Heat: Ensure pets have access to plenty of fresh water, shelter, shade.

• Watch for Signs of Anxiety: Be aware of signs of stress or anxious in pets, such as excessive panting, shaking, hiding, or whining. If a pet exhibits severe anxiety, consult a veterinarian.

Firework injuries are one of the leading causes of medical emergencies during Fourth of July celebrations; children are most often the ones injured. Common injuries or accidents when using any pyrotechnic material include severe skin burns, eye injuries, hearing loss, and fires.

To keep the holiday weekend as safe as possible, the El Paso Fire Department recommends the following safety tips:

•Dial 9-1-1 if in need of emergency assistance.

•Instead of using fireworks, consider attending an authorized public fireworks display.

•If attending a public display, children must be supervised at all times. Please do not pick up any firework debris as they could still be hot and cause burn injuries.

•Be careful when using fire (cooking, grilling, etc.). Keep grills and other fire sources at least 7 feet away from your home, roofs, trees, etc.

•Establish a pet-free and children-free safe zone at least 3 feet from any stoves, ovens, or grills.

•After using a grill, completely extinguish any items used for cooking charcoal, wood, or pellets.

•Residents who live outside city limits, need to check any applicable bans before using fireworks.
