(UPDATED: 1/30/2024 at 5:30 PM)
⚠️ Strong wind and rain will impact our area beginning later today (Tuesday, Jan. 30), enhancing the probability of weather-related power outages, downed trees creating access issues and the possibility of flooding tomorrow into Thursday. This is one of the most significant storms we’ve experienced this season, and the combination of saturated soils and high winds increase the possibility of impacts.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to prepare themselves and their property for potential power outages and for the possibility of wind and water damage before the storm arrives. 📢 Reminder! 📢 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant and loan program funds are still available for eligible Humboldt County homeowners whose homes were damaged as a result of the Dec. 20, 2022 earthquakes and/or the 2022-2023 winter storms.
Grants up to $40,675 and loans up to $40,000 are available for qualifying low and very-low-income homeowners to make vital repairs to homes impacted by the earthquakes or 2022-2023 winter storms. Applicants must meet age and income requirements, and requirements vary per program.
➡️ The application process to obtain a USDA grant or loan takes time, and USDA programs can be combined and applied for simultaneously. To help navigate this lengthy process and to ensure applications are complete and meet the USDA’s requirements, local Disaster Case Management (DCM) support is available.
Homeowners with residences that were red or yellow tagged due to earthquake or winter storm damage are especially encouraged to reach out to a local Disaster Case Manager to begin the application process even if repairs have previously been completed.
For more information on the application process or to access DCM services, please call 707-382-5890.
The USDA has additional funds available for non-disaster related home repairs for income-eligible community members aged 62 and older. Humboldt County homeowners interested in applying for the USDA’s non-disaster related housing repair grants and loans should call 530-742-2727 ext. 5 or email [email protected] or [email protected] for assistance with the application process.

September is National Preparedness Month, a time set aside each year to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.
One of the biggest challenges we face during any emergency is communication. While we have many methods to notify our community of important safety information, at the end of the day, it comes down to you. We know that we can’t reach everyone – but with your help, we can get the right information to the people who need it at the right time.
𝗦𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽? Identify your friends, family or neighbors who may need assistance during an emergency or may be unable to receive emergency information (off the grid, no cell or internet service, etc.) and connect them with the information they need to stay safe. Check on your neighbors and share accurate emergency information (that is found directly from Humboldt OES, Sheriff, or one of our partner agencies) with your community.
Many thanks to Reyes Coca-Cola for a generous water donation, and Tomaso's Specialty Foods for helping us move it. Your community support has a big impact, and we are so grateful to Pay It Forward alongside you!
As the Gasquet community begins repopulating they are faced with much to clean - spoiled food in refrigerators due to the extended power outage, and debris and messes from everything else. So, we sent clean-up totes full of essentials to help complete these tasks. This community is strong, and we are honored to be here for you!
Thank you Family Resource Center of the Redwoods for assisting with this distribution.
Please continue to keep all those impacted by fire in your thoughts. To learn how you can help please visit https://www.tinyurl.com/pifh2023.
Thanks to Humboldt Made and Pay it Forward Humboldt for stepping up when there are needs in our community. On this Thirsty Thursday, we remind you we are a drop off location for water for those who are displaced by the wildfires. One gallon or individual cases of water are preferred. Help how you can, when you can. Our community relies on community. 🍻
Another big day getting and sending supplies to our neighbors up north!
Thank you Nick and Will for all your help today!
The Family Resource Center of the Redwoods came down this afternoon to pick up these highly needed items for Del Norte; plus fresh produce and food donated by North Coast Growers Association, Luna Farms, Rain Frog, Earthly Edibles CSA, and Wild Rose Farms. Big thanks to Humboldt Made for coordinating this!
Special thanks to the FRC for all their efforts helping us serve those impacted by the fire.
These needs are being met thanks to our awesome community working together to Pay It Forward. Heartfelt gratitude to Humboldt Area Foundation/Wild Rivers Community Foundation and Patricia D. & William B. Smullin Foundation for their monumental support.

It's been a busy weekend! If you saw Jessica or Nick at Costco spilling pillows and towels all over the store - no, we aren't opening a hotel or making cool forts. We are putting your donations to use getting highly requested items for our neighbors impacted by the wildfires.
This morning a load of much needed water and jerky went east. Thank you to Steve for driving this load over from the coast! Special thanks to Mendes Distributing for the jerky donation, Wildberries Marketplace, and Six Rivers Brewery and donors for collecting water.
For our northern neighbors, our friend Will drove up new pillows for folks staying at the Red Cross shelter, and a large supply of towels, toiletries, and other essentials to the Family Resource Center of the Redwoods. The FRCR is helping us get these items to folks in Del Norte communities that we aren't able to reach. We are so grateful for this partnership.
Continued thanks to our Humboldt community for helping us Pay It Forward this fire season. We are Stronger Together!

We hear it every year, ✨“𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴” or “𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸,”✨ - so let’s set some things straight. Here are the best ways you can receive/find accurate information about wildfire evacuations and other emergencies happening in Humboldt County:
⚠️ 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁 HumboldtGov.org/Alerts.
Do not rely on the Wireless Emergency Alert feature on your phone to let you know when it’s time to evacuate. Opt in for alerts from Humboldt County to know when evacuations are underway in your community. These alerts can be received via phone call (cell or landline), text, email or the Everbridge App.
✨ 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦? ✨ Areas under an evacuation order will be patrolled by HCSO deputies utilizing the hi-lo siren. This is a distinct siren that if you hear it, it means it’s time to leave. It’s also good to use the buddy system. Does a neighbor, friend or family member nearby have access to cell service/internet/power? Make a plan with them so they can alert you during an evacuation warning or order.
🔍 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁 Protect.Genasys.com.
Our county has been split into 300+ numerical zones. Visit the above website (formerly known as Zonehaven) and write your zone number down. When an evacuation occurs, we will utilize zone names in our alerts. We will try to also include local landmarks, however, due to character limitations on emergency alerts, we may not always be able to spell out the zone boundaries.
✨ 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘣𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘦? ✨Give us a call (prior to an emergency if possible) and we can help you find your zone number for future reference. 📞707-268-2500

We get it, the internet (especially social media) adds way too much stress into our lives. You can still find emergency information by tuning into your local talk radio station (we partner with KMUD for regular emergency updates) or TV news. If your area is under an evacuation order, there are typically sandwich boards set up around the community at places people frequent (think grocery stores, post offices, Red Cross Shelters, etc.) with physical printed copies of incident information. When all else fails, this will be our method of communicating to impacted communities.

𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘋𝘶𝘵𝘺: Watch Duty is an app the has risen in popularity due to its relevance during wildfires. If you are just monitoring where fires are and their general progression, Watch Duty is helpful for that! However, while it can have good information about fires, because of its reliance on crowdsourcing, scanner traffic and press releases for information rather than getting its information directly from the fire commander, sometimes it can have inaccurate and/or outdated information. Please do not rely on Watch Duty for evacuation notice. Evacuation alerts for Humboldt County will come from Humboldt Alert. Please sign up to receive these alerts so that you can be alerted immediately without delay. We encourage you to use Watch Duty in tandem with the above mentioned information sources, rather than relying on it as your only source of information.
**Note fire progression and behavior information will not come from our office. We will only be sharing information we have verified and received first hand from our fire partners. The North Coast has wonderful reporters that are dedicated to wildfire coverage and post verified information! We are in close contact with many of these media sources. However, for critical safety instructions, such as evacuations, please refer to Humboldt Alert or our emergency page. Sometimes these alerts may not be published immediately by media. Also, once the information is sent from our office to the media, we have no control over how it is used or when it is posted. So, if you’re media source is slow to post or has wrong information, you will need to take it up with them.
Also, be sure to choose reputable and balanced news sources to receive your emergency updates!
