As a trauma psychotherapist, I've witnessed the devastating effects of Catholic clergy s*xual abuse for decades. Join me in watching the essential documentary "Sanctuary of Sin" by WGN Films. I had the honor of participating as a trauma expert. It sheds light on the hidden religious order behind the abuse crisis and offers resources for healing.

In 2018, 185 clergy members were publicly named for credible abuse allegations in Illinois, but the actual number is much higher—690 accused clergy members. The report reveals over 500 uninvestigated abuse allegations by the diocese.

Chicago's WGN-TV presents "Sanctuary of Sin," a three-part series reported by Larry Potash, premiering tonight on WGN News at Nine. Learn about the origins, growth, and current state of the Catholic Church s*x abuse crisis. Don't miss the half-hour special on May 26 at 7 pm CT on WGN-TV, WGN+ TV streaming app, WGNTV.com/Live, and the WGN News mobile app. Encore presentation on June 3 at 4:30 pm CT. *xualabuse

As I get older, my body continues to change and what used to be in one place is now in another, measurements have changed and buying under garments requires a lot of thought and try ons.

However, what I am most focused on, is my overall health and wellbeing; mind, body and spirit.

No matter your body type, height, and weight, none of us will escape physical changes. I love the body I’m in, appreciate my endurance, celebrate the healings, honor the wisdom that has carried me, held me, and pushed me.

Are there pounds that I want to shed? Yes. However, the motivation is not to fit into a grid that was not designed by someone like me, or included anyone in the research that represented me. The motivation to lose is all about my comfort level.

Too often Black women’s bodies are judged based on the standard of what is considered s*xy, desirable, or healthy by white men. If you look at the medical charts to determine your “ideal” weight based on height many Black women are outside of that range & judged.

Oftentimes, we as Black women judge ourselves because our bodies often include curves that fit into sizes that are not considered ideal. This is one way that internalized racism impacts us as a form of oppression. It is the belief that white beauty standards and values are superior to one's own culture and values.

This can manifest in a variety of ways, such as an internalized desire to fit into a predominantly white society by changing one's appearance to fit the accepted beauty standards. This includes body type, as Black women may feel pressure to reach an “ideal” body type in order to be accepted and validated by their peers. This pressure can lead to unhealthy eating habits and a distorted body image, which can have serious consequences on one's mental and physical health.

Listen!!! When we are triggered by known or unknown trauma, one of the side effects is going, going, busy, busy, discomfort or boredom when there’s nothing to DO. Our trauma history makes it difficult to BE. 🤷🏽‍♀️

When I learned of this year's theme for National Women's Month, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,” I knew I had to invite Dr. Reverend Irene Taylor. She’s a retired pastor who has served her professional calling for almost 40 years, including as a United States Army Reserve chaplain. To say that she has impacted the lives of many women is an understatement. Although our time in conversation falls short of capturing Reverend Irene’s full brilliance, it honors and celebrates her contribution to our ever-expanding treasury of women’s truths.

After a recent visit with my 88-year-old mother, I wrote: “In this moment, I re-realize how similar I am to my mom, beyond the physical, beyond what I can even put my hand on.” Mothers and daughters. As I grow older––moving through years that I previously only ever associated with my mother, casting off ages that will belong to my daughter soon enough––I think about the passage of time and return to the interconnectedness of this matrilineal relationship.

Connection, we want it, we don’t want it.
We need it.
Healing does not happen in a bubble.
It requires us to come back to connection, our original state, how we are made.
Does it hurt? Yup, sometimes.
It hurts more when we isolate.

💯

I missed daughter’s day! This my favorite daughter in the whole wide world!
When a daughter comes into your life, it’s an invitation for growth. Sometimes that means humbling yourself & accepting I don’t always know better. Sometimes that means seeing yourself in each other. Sometimes it means standing back & witnessing as she evolves in her own way in her own time. It always means loving the beautiful soul that she is. xoxo

I have witnessed women evolve more times than I can count, and as they do, deeper authenticity and a new kind of strength is revealed.

Not that “strong Black woman” archetype portraying us as immune to pain, mean, and tirelessly doing and doing.

Join me and a group of vibrant Black women like yourself for a conversation about reclaiming our strength. In this circle gathering you will get a little peek into:

✨ Your internal definitions of what it means to be a strong Black woman.
✨ How to challenge those definitions that are not self-loving.
✨ Ways to take tiny steps to build strength through rest, ease and flow.

On June 19, 1866, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas.

The observances included prayer meetings, singing and celebrants wore new clothes as a way of representing their newfound freedom.

Celebrations have continued across the United States.

We recognize the end of slavery and honor the culture and achievements in the Black community.

I'm talking about circles of strength.

What are they?

I realized that we moved through circles throughout our life throughout our day throughout our relationships.

And there are some steps within these circles that interconnect and depend upon each other and they need to be navigated regularly just so we can stay in touch with who we are, where we are, and how we are.

Inspired by a word from the Akan tribe in Ghana, Sankofa.

The translation of the word is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”

The Sankofa symbolizes the Akan people’s quest for knowledge among the Akan with the implication that the quest is based on critical examination and intelligent and patient investigation.

Thus, the Akan believe the past serves as a guide for planning the future. This wisdom in learning from the past ensures a strong future.

Racial disparities in mental health care are real, but not well understood.

Studies show that racial stigma may be one of the reasons people don’t seek help.

No therapist should ever be expected to 100 percent relate to everything a client says. But wouldn’t it be amazing to connect with each other on a deeper and more meaningful level?

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us… As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

There are times when you have come to the end of your rope, & this time is different. This time you want something to hold onto, you don’t want to let go. That is why we are here! To break your fall through transformative therapy, helping you to see who you are, instead of who you are not. I know, it is quite a mind shift. However, there have been thousands that have been impacted in transformative ways while working with us. Guess what each of us have benefited from someone breaking our falls & we have landed in places we never would have imagined. Others imagined our lives to be more, until we were able to do that for ourselves.
