For 17 years, 9 month, and 3 days, I had him physically. He was such a gentle soul and I loved him with every bit of my being. His name was Kaleb Harris and he was my entire world. On June 8, 2022, he was a passenger in a vehicle on Gillis Hill Road, on his way to work. The driver of the vehicle he was in went into oncoming traffic, into the path of an unlicensed driver. That vehicle caught on fire and my son was left in the car. His body was burned so badly he had to be identified by dental records. I am an ICU nurse and recieved the call that my beautiful boy was downstairs in the morgue. Screaming in agony, I couldn't understand, I save people all the time, why couldn't my son be saved. On June 8th, I began a journey down the most devastating and agonizing road I have ever traveled. It's been four months and I still cry myself to sleep most nights. I never saw my son's body, but images of him burning haunt me all the same.
Original reports stated that the driver of the vehicle my son was in, hydroplaned. Believing it was an unpreventable accident, I was not actively seeking justice. I was forced into an autopsy by the state. I begged them not to mutalate my baby's body anymore, and I know the pain would be unbearable if I found out my baby was still alive when the car caught fire, but my request was denied. On June 16, I did the hardest thing I ever had to do, bury my son. I was given the cruelest form of punishment, a life sentence without my child.
In July, I was updated by the investigating officer, officer Biggerstaff. He told me the road conditions were NOT consistent with hydroplaning. He also told me the driver of the green charger, whose car caught on fire, was driving with a revoked license. Sobbing, asking him to spare me from the gory details, I begged him to get justice for my son, and he told me he would. I had been patient, believing that police were working dillegently on my son's case, but I hadn't heard from Biggerstaff since I called him that day in July.
Early October, after speaking with my attorney and finding out no charges had been filed yet, I decided to call the investigating officer. He told me they haven't pressed charges and they were not going to. He continued to tell me that Kaleb was in the vehicle with his stepmother when the accident occurred and that was a big factor in why he didn't file charges. I told him, "Kaleb doesn't have a stepmother. You would have known this if you had called me at all since that day I called you in July begging you to get justice for my son, or if you had properly investigated. Officer Biggerstaff of the Fayetteville Police Department left me in the dark for four months while handling my son's case. He then nonchalantly directed me to his supervisor.
Speaking to his supervisor, Ltd. Kiger, he began talking about all the field experience that Biggerstaff has in accident investigation. Now this is the same man that told me that since Kaleb was in was riding in the car with his stepmother, and she was responsible for the accident, they wouldn't be filing charges. I'm like your investigator couldn't even figure out something so simple as to the relationship between my son and the driver, do you really expect me to believe diligence was done? He has all that experience and didn't figure that out. I surely wouldn't be bragging about that. Also, the police did not follow up on witnesses reports that one of the drivers in the accident appeared "high."
The department has been under fire before for ethical violations before, and I believe another one was committed here. Kiger referenced knowing of my son from a crime he witnessed last year. His wife was the investigator on that case. Clifton Plank and I were puzzled to why he would even mention that because that case is irrelevant to this one. Because of that remark, I believe he had some preconceived notions about my son, and turned a blind eye to his investigator's incompetence. Now, my son was never a suspect in that crime, merely a witness, but he was somewhere he shouldn't have been, but ultimately did the right thing.
I wasn't as vocal before because I believed justice would prevail, especially since my attorney had informed me he believed there was a clear case for misdomeanor vehicular death. I told Kiger I would fight for my son, and I'll never forget that arrogant tone he had when he said, "You do what you feel like you have to do but it won't change a thing." Well guess what, I'll do what I have to do to advocate for my son, since your department failed to do so. I will take on the entire Fayetteville Police Department every single day if I have to. My son's voice was taken from him. Please, I'm begging you, help me be his voice. Please demand that the FPD press charges for my son. Fayetteville Police Department
The Fayetteville Police Department found a way to block my story with the Fayetteville Observer. I'll fight for my son but it kills me inside to know I'm probably fighting a losing battle.
This is the contact info to the Fayetteville Police Department. Feel free to call/email and advocate for my son.
I'll take on the entire Fayetteville Police Department myself every single day if I have to.
