Autism Awareness vs. Autism Acceptance
In recent years, the month of April has changed from using the title Autism Awareness Month to Autism Acceptance Month. Many people have wondered, what is the difference?
With autism awareness, the focus was aimed towards informing and educating the general public about autism, its symptoms, and its impact on individuals and families.
Autism acceptance goes beyond awareness and places emphasis on understanding, inclusion, and equal opportunity. It focuses on supporting and valuing Autistic individuals by recognizing their unique strengths and challenges.
Our sister company is hiring in the Fayetteville location! This is a great group of motor therapists looking to add an SLP or two who fit with their play based neurodiversity affirming style of treatment.
This is a great opportunity to collaborate and learn from other disciplines. SMSS has a sensory motor gym and encourages and promotes SLPs to utilize the space to provide sensory support while you work to build their speech and language.

What is it and how do I know if my kid needs one?
Modified barium, swallow study is a test where your child is placed in front of an x-ray, and given various consistencies, barium to see how effectively they swallow. This can give us insight on if the food or liquid is going down the right way or not it can also tell us where in the swallow the dysfunction is. This can help your therapist determine a better plan of care to target the areas that are really needed.
A clinical feeding and swallowing assessment will look at your child oral feeding skills but unfortunately we don’t have x-ray vision. We are trained to look for signs of aspiration (food, going down the wrong way) and if we see any of those signs we may recommend a modified barium swallow, study to rule out or confirm aspiration.
Black History Month is American History. We honor and embrace the hardships, growth, and commitment that Black Americans have endured and achieved though out history and in our world today. 🤎

Looking for some motivating to use in and that are great for modeling with ? Anali is using a simple balloon pump and modeling “go” with verbal and using AAC. When we let the balloon go it flies around the room which is so fun! Best thing is, this activity encourages since assistance is needed to fill it up again. Now we have opportunity to model “help.” We can expand this activity by having multiple balloon colors to choose from and/or making the balloon big or little.

Join us next week for Fall spirit week! We can’t wait to see you all dressed up!
We love seeing our team supporting each other and collaborating. We all have different strengths and that’s why reaching out to colleagues for help and suggestions is so important when growing as a clinician. Just like today when one of ours was preparing to give a test she had never given before. It would’ve been super intimidating to do it on her own, but with the support of her colleagues, it may feel a little less daunting.

HUGE thanks to my gifted and giving friend Angela Moorad of OMazing Kids, LLC. https://www.facebook.com/OMazingKidsAAC/ She worked behind the scenes to proof the graphic and help me with whatever was needed. Angela is a powerhouse in the worldwide AAC community. If you don't follow her yet, it's a good idea! Her OMazing Kids resources are spectacularly detailed and meticulously updated.
Your therapist or other member of our staff will be administering screenings prior to your child’s session. These will take about five minutes and require no response from your kiddo. Swipe for info on what an OAE screener is.

Hey all! This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to learn pedi feeding or advance in your skills with mentoring. We have found our program to be super successful. One of our clinicians has been with us a little over a year. She started her training after her 90 day probationary period. After completing her training and 6 month mentorship she is now working on her 2nd level of training for medically complex patients. Her caseload is comprised of 60% feeding patients and part of the reason for hiring is to increase the amount of feeding patients on her schedule. In less than 18 months she will have went from little experience in the area to 80-90% of her caseload being feeding patients!
Reach out if you have questions.
