On 12/13/21, Chelsea Maslanka, became the victim of retaliatory firing and whistleblower silencing for reporting the abuse of special needs children at Selmer Elementary School in McNairy County Tn. As a mandatory reporter, Miss Maslanka reported the incidents to School Principal, Mrs. Pamela Simon ([email protected]) (731)-645-3131; after which her workplace became an abusive and hostile environment. She was ostracized and punished for speaking out against her fellow employees and her own daughter was eventually assaulted by an employee that violently kicked the 4 year old girl in the back causing pain and leaving bruising that lasted over a week.

The situation culminated with Chelsea’s surprise termination on a Monday morning, just before Christmas. Principal Simon ambushed Chelsea as she arrived for work and forced her to follow her to the county administration office to meet with Director Of Schools Greg Martin ([email protected]) (731) 645-3267. Upon entering Mr. Martin’s office she was instantly terminated for “risqué” Instagram photos taken years prior by professional photographers when she worked as a model. This occurred less than 3 business days after the abuse of her own child was reported, less than 2 business days after she was chastised and berated by the Principal for “breaking the chain of command” and reporting the abuse of her child to the Director of Schools. In spite of the fact that the Principal, had, by this time already demonstrated that she either suffered from terminal apathy or would deliberately suppress abuse allegations and be unwilling to follow abuse allegation procedure per Tennessee state law. Coincidentally this was just 1 business day removed from the Principal informing her that the teachers she reported on and that admitted striking children would receive an informal write up and that no further action would be taken.

As a result of this deliberately unlawful and demonstrably baseless and retaliatory termination, Chelsea was forced to sell pets, livestock, and personal items to ensure her family could still have a meaningful Christmas and sustain themselves until she could secure new employment. The purpose of this video is to shine light on morally reprehensible deeds and inaction of school officials and to put that information in the hands of the community, parents and relevant state agencies in the hopes that we can force a positive change that benefits these children.

These incidents were reported to law enforcement (Detective Nathan Harrison, Selmer Police Department, Case #21-01669) and child services after it became apparent that school officials would only continue to bury the misconduct and silence those that spoke out. Sadly and adding insult to injury it was relayed that no action would be taken till after Christmas and New Years; as apparently Christmas parties, family get-togethers and New Years Eve celebrations take precedence over aggressively investigating credible allegations of misconduct by school employees and administrators. So here we are, weeks later and the case has yet to proceed beyond officers taking the initial report, the child that was kicked has not been interviewed, school staff have not been interviewed, and the individuals that admitted to striking children and those that were complicit in covering it up came off Christmas break and went right back to working with children as if nothing happened nor ever will.

A GoFundMe has been set up for this young woman and her family as a result of the torment she endured and her unlawful termination.
