🧚♀️ Trixie 🧚♀️
Hello, my name is Trixie, and I have a story to share that might just tug at your heartstrings. I arrived at HSHC as a timid and nervous stray, unsure of the world around me. But since my arrival, I've been on a remarkable journey of transformation.
In the safe and caring environment of the shelter, I've learned to trust again. I can now walk on a leash with confidence, and I've opened my heart to the affection of our incredible staff and volunteers. I have even passed my cat test here at the shelter, showing that I can get along with feline friends. My past may be a mystery, but I had my reasons to be cautious. Humans can be frightening, but deep down, I know there's kindness in them too. I do have a little request, though. Young children make me a bit anxious, so I'm hoping for a home where any potential family members are adults. And if you have other dogs at home, I'd be thrilled to meet them here at the shelter. Their approval means the world to me.
All I ask for is a chance to be understood and cared for by patient individuals. Let me show you what a loyal and devoted companion I can be. My heart is ready, and I hope yours is too. Will you be the one to change my life forever?

🌲 Pinecone🌲
Meet Pinecone! At 2 years old and 70 lbs, he might not realize his size, but he sure knows how to spread love and joy. His favorite pastime? Playing tug-of-war (and secretly winning) with his beloved jolly ball - just let him think he's the champ! Pinecone thrives on routine, finding comfort and contentment in it. Strong, loyal, and overflowing with love, he's the perfect mix of playfulness and devotion. This housebroken champ is a quick learner and happily follows commands, especially if there's squeeze cheese involved - his absolute favorite treat!
While Pinecone might not be the best fit for a first-time dog owner, he's the star of the show among our volunteers. When he first arrived as a stray at HSHC, he was hesitant and guarded, unsure of the love offered. But every passing day brought a breakthrough; he began to trust, to accept affection, and his heart opened wide. Pinecone's transformation into a loving, affectionate companion is a testament to his resilience and capacity for love. He's waiting for that special someone who'll appreciate his loyal nature, playful spirit, and giant heart. Pinecone is more than ready for a loving home where he can continue to flourish and share his boundless love. Meet him today at HSHC!

Students from Edgewood Intermediate School recently took part in our Pennies For Pets campaign and raised.... wait for it.... $2,305! 🎉 Not only did they blow this classroom campaign out of the water bowl, they also collected item donations for our animals in need. We couldn't be more proud of these young animal advocates who have truly shown us that small change can make a big difference. ❤️

💖 Vinni 💖
Meet Vinni, the sweet 7-year-old pup who’s great at following rules! She’s awesome indoors, knows commands like sit, down, off, and stay, and loves hanging out with kids without any fuss. Vinni recently had a little health hiccup but bounced back with bravery! Now she's all about looking ahead to a brighter tomorrow, excited to share cuddles and joy with a loving family. While Vinni has experience living with dogs before, she prefers meeting potential siblings at the shelter to ensure it's a perfect match. Plus, she's letting us in on a little secret: she'd prefer a home without cats! Ready to join your home and heart, Vinni's tail is wagging with anticipation!

🌳 Oaken 🌳
As a 7-year-old fellow, I've experienced a few things about being a cat:
1- Naps are essential, as many as possible.
2- Human beings can be wonderful pets, affectionate and friendly.
3- Life may throw you a few curveballs, but you must be
brave and keep your chin up.
I was surrendered to the HSHC on June 3 because my human could not keep me. I don't know if it is because I tested positive for feline leukemia. FeLV is a virus that suppresses a cat's immune system. It is transmitted through saliva, so FeLV+ cats should be kept separate from FeLV- cats. They should not share water or food bowls. FeLV+ cats may have a shortened life span and will need regular veterinarian evaluations. But if you ask me, that is no reason to avoid having such a fantastic cat as me! I'm as sweet as they come! If you decide to adopt me, know that you are doing a very noble thing. You are giving a cat a chance that most places wouldn't offer. Although my lifespan may be shorter than that of a FeLV-cat-, my life will be filled with happiness for both of us.

Update: A fospice has been found ❤️
No animal deserves to die in a shelter, so we need you to meet Chanel.
Chanel came to us as an owner surrender with another dog due to her owner moving. Shortly after, Chanel was diagnosed with a terminal condition called Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). This disease affects a dog's spinal cord and causes progressive muscle weakness and loss of coordination. The most equivalent human condition would be ALS.
Chanel does not even know she has this condition. She is still as snuggly and loving as ever. Staff members stop by her room daily for cuddles and kisses, but we don't know how much time is left to do this. And the last kisses she gives should not be within the 4 walls of this shelter.
We are begging someone in our community to step up for Chanel. We need someone to give her care and warmth until her day to cross the rainbow bridge arrives. This is what we call a Hospice Foster or a “Fospice”. As one of the truly no-kill animal shelters in the country, we are committed to giving every animal the best ending. We need help giving Chanel just that.
Chanel is a 50lb pit bull mix and still has a great quality of life, but with her diagnosis, we cannot make her adoptable. With her prognosis we cannot accurately predict how long she has left with us.
If you are interested in learning more about whatever it takes to take care of Chanel, please come in! We need to find her a foster home as soon as possible. Chanel has a positive history with dogs, passed her cat test, and would prefer older children. Due to Chanel's mobility becoming more limited, we believe she would to best in a home with minimal stairs or are able to keep her on the ground level.

Prince 💔
This royal man is deteriorating before our eyes here at the shelter. We are doing all we can to keep him comfortable and show him love, but he is so sad. He is so scared.
To allow him a since of security, we gave him a crate to lay in since he loves it- but we are now finding him under it. Shutting down. Shutting the world out.
We have all had our moments like Prince. Where the world seems so dim and it feels impossible to pick yourself back up, but many of us had people to lift our spirits and show us love. That's all Prince is looking for. It's all he needs.
If you have a cozy spot in your home for this royal Prince, please come in tomorrow to meet him. He knows his name may sound like her requires a castle or a palace, but he promises a loving home would be enough. Please help Prince.
Prince needs a home where everyone is 16+ and no felines. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, just apply and come into the shelter Thursday 12-5pm - no need to wait for a call!

📢 Dog Seeking Playmates 📢
Is your pup (or even pups) in need of the ulti-mutt playmate? Look no further than our man, Mamba! Mamba is a playgroup all-star and has even loved living with a canine companion in his foster home!
Not only is he a rockstar with dogs, he also doubles as a personal space heater! His cuddles are superior and his kisses melt your soul. If you are looking for an 80lb teddy bear, Mamba will happily take the role!
The basics? Mamba has them down pat. He knows general commands, is crate trained, house trained and motivated to keep learning. He's such a polite man, but he's still a young pup who would love to continue his doggy skills education in your home.
Mamba would thrive in a home where everyone is 8+ with no feline friends. His foster even said, "This pup is going to be a huge blessing to any family that decides to adopt him!" ❤️
Don't wait to meet him! Call our team at 317-773-4974 to set up a meet and greet. He will be back at the shelter from foster on Saturday, but grant our New Year's wish and don't let him stay here any longer!

😇 Angel 😇
I lived in my previous home for 11 years until the day my parents showed up with a miniature human. I was their baby for over a decade, but that all changed when the little p**p machine arrived. They stopped giving me the attention I had grown accustomed to, and my world changed in so many ways. Looking back, I’m not afraid to admit I was jealous. It felt like I had been replaced and didn’t know how to handle my emotions. I’m ashamed to confess I started having litterbox avoidance issues. It’s common for significant environmental changes to trigger these types of aversion behaviors. I’m not proud of my actions, but we all make mistakes. I lived in a foster home for six months and successfully used the litterbox! Now, I am back at the HSHC, living in the cattery. The interviewer lady came to see me, and I gave her nose kisses and moved all over the shelf to get petted. She discovered that even though I am 12-years-old, I still enjoy playing and being kittenish! My coat is looking so much better. It is the color of cafe au lait, white with some caramel throughout. I hope someone out there will give me a chance to prove what an angel I really am. If my fluffy, soft, creamy white fur doesn’t do it for you---my big blue eyes surely will!

🫶 Churro 🫶
Meet Churro, a one-year-old bundle of joy who found his way to us as a stray. This lovable pup is full of energy and smarts, making every day an adventure. Churro's tail wags with excitement every time he hears the word "walk," and he'll melt your heart with those big, soulful eyes. He's a sucker for treats and will do just about anything for a tasty snack. But what he loves most in the whole wide world is a gentle petting session that makes him feel cherished. Churro's waiting for a forever home where he can share all his love and loyalty. Will you be the one to give him that second chance at a happy life?

🚨 Special Message From Our President & CEO 🚨
Dear Friends,
As 2023 comes to a close, I am reaching out in hopes you'll consider one more gift to support our unequaled, life-saving efforts. We have saved the lives of over 4,000 Hamilton County AND Hoosier animals this year--many of whom were the hardest to save and place imaginable. While we are incredibly proud of that accomplishment, there is no end in sight to the steady flow of seriously injured and neglected animals whose lives are depending on us.
From 14 year old Breck who was abandoned in a field the day after Christmas, to 13 year old Roxxy who required a leg amputation due to an injury that had gone untreated for years, HSHC provides sanctuary to animals 365 days a year--regardless of available space or resources.
The emergency medical and daily care these animals need and deserve is funded by you. The wages and benefits of the super heroes who work here are also primarily funded by donations. In fact, over 80% of our annual operating budget is funded by individual donations, grants, sponsorships, and your support of HSHC special events and fundraisers.
While we remain hopeful that HSHC will find respite from the profound challenges faced in 2023, it is unlikely. As the number of displaced Marion County strays and unwanted dogs continues to flood every community, many of those animals will find their ways here. As backyard breeders throughout Indiana remain unchecked by lackluster laws, they will continue producing unhealthy puppies who find their ways into the wrong hands, and then into ours. As always, hundreds of fragile, neonatal kittens continue to call our catteries home--these tiny lives are the most vulnerable in the building and require constant vigilance and care.
Through the heart break and crises we have faced this year, and the inevitable ones to come, every single animal who enters our doors receives a chance to live, love, and be loved.
But those chances are not free.
That is why it's with the utmost urgency that I hope you'll consider making one, last life-saving, tax-deductible donation to help us this year. With your continued support, I know we can face any challenges the New Year may bring with grace and many, happy endings.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Stevens
President and CEO

✨ Home For The Holidays Feature: Biscuit 🎁
What a coincidence that my name is Biscuit because I'm remarkably skilled at making biscuits! You must agree that I am a very pretty Calico girl. I lived with my previous family for four years (all my life) and had a good relationship with everyone in our home, including the kids, so I am sorry they surrendered me. I had crystals in my urine which made going potty painful. I am now eating a diet that helps prevent these crystals. I wasn't a happy camper when I first arrived at the shelter. It took some time for me to decompress, but I eventually came out of my shell and sought attention from the staff. I did really well in my last foster home, my people were very kind and patient as I took the time to adjust. Keep in mind that it takes time for me to accept affection, and I prefer interaction on my terms for now. I hope my forever family will accept me for who I am, make biscuits with me, and encourage me as I continue to build trust. Once I'm comfortable and feel safe, I'll let my guard down and show you what a sweet and loving girl I am!
