After my kids, Chelsea and Kirby, graduated from TCU a few years ago, I had an empty nest. My kids would always tell me, “Mom, you need a hobby!” I never really ever had a specific hobby where I collected anything or made anything or had a pastime activity that I really put much effort into. I did somethings here and there, but nothing that I really considered a hobby. Fast forward to 2019… I see on the Nextdoor app that a person was looking for someone who makes silver jewelry to either help them repair a piece of jewelry or make a piece. (I don’t recall exactly which.) Anyway, someone mentioned a person that was really good at making silver jewelry and it got my mind ginning because I’ve always really liked wearing jewelry. I especially liked contemporary designs in sterling silver and turquoise and I thought it would be neat to learn how to make my own. I started looking at her designs and I just decided to call her one day. She was very helpful and gave me some information on where I could go to get started in making my own jewelry.
It was a slow process at first, but I ended up joining the Arlington Gem and Mineral Club. I decided to take some introductory classes which led to me taking some private lessons. There was a huge learning curve on the front end! Shortly thereafter, I bought my equipment and tools, purchased some metals and gemstones and I was on my way. I sold a couple of pieces almost immediately. I don’t have a concrete number, but I think I’ve made about 50 so far. I make earrings, necklaces and bracelets, but my favorite type of jewelry to make is rings. Making jewelry is not only fun, but it’s also challenging because you have to perfect your stamping technique and learn how to manipulate the metal, but I absolutely enjoy the creativity of it all. I love just about every piece I make and have a hard time selling them… when I do, it’s usually by word-of-mouth. I’m so glad that my kids encouraged me to start a hobby and that I found one that I truly enjoy!
