Call for Volunteers!
Ranch Brigade - Texas Brigades is looking for some plant nerds to assist with the plant collection day of camp, Tuesday, July 16. Camp is held in Santa Anna, Texas, and the volunteers typically arrive by 8:30 am and we are done by noon. They feed you lunch! The campers are split up into small groups and the volunteers assist them in plant identification, collection, and pressing the plants for the plant book they will make the next day. There is a short discussion on stocking rate and carrying capacity and the volunteers also help their groups with the math on the one page worksheet. This is a great volunteer opportunity for NRCS/USDA employees, wildlife biologists, ranch managers, and anyone with a love for our native plants.
The morning is fast paced and usually very hot, but it is very rewarding to work with these kids. As this is done on their second day of camp, they have had limited exposure to plant ID at that point and your expertise is imperative. There are returning campers that are quite the plant ID experts and it is really fun to collect plants with them. You never know which kid will really take to plant ID and its really exciting to watch these kids get excited about native plants and land stewardship.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in or it sounds like someone you know, please comment and we’ll put you in touch w/Ranch Brigade coordinators. They have 4 volunteers confirmed and need 8 to run a smooth ship.
