The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers.
Organized at Richmond, Virginia in 1896... The citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy personified the best qualities of America. Members of the SCV are often asked why we care so much about our ancestors. The reason is simple–they live within and through us, and continue to inspire us. As William Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead. It's not even past."
Knowing what our kin were able to endure and accomplish tells us what we are able to endure and accomplish, and it can be seen within others as well. Simply being in the same room with fellow sons of Confederate veterans is inspiring in itself. The connections we intuitively have with each other transcend our own understanding, as if our bloods cry out to each other–brothers in arms recognizing each other generations after the fact.
Confederate veterans are not just our heroes, they are the very foundation of who we are. They are the source of our blood, our values, our very lives, and the lives of our descendants after us. Their lives and their stories are the heritage we have been entrusted with passing on to our own descendants.
So yes, sometimes we look in the mirror and picture the man we want to become, but we sons of Confederate veterans might do better to look inside ourselves instead.
