in 2010, LCpl Kyle Carpenter was manning a rooftop security position with a fellow Marine in the Marjah District of Afghanistan when the enemy began to launch gr***des at their position. When a gr***de landed within their sandbagged position, Carpenter moved toward the gr***de and absorbed the blast with his body, which severely wounded him but saved the life of his fellow Marine.
For his courageous actions, he received the Medal of Honor. Carpenter’s citation states, “By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”
Semper Fidelis, Marine! 🇺🇸
On this day in 1943, Marines with the 2d Marine Division landed on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, in the Gilbert Islands. For the next 76 hours, Marines battled against intense Japanese resistance to secure the island and gain control of the critical airfield.
The initial landings were especially challenging, as low tides beached many landing craft on an offshore reef, forcing Marines to wade hundreds of yards in the open water under intense enemy fire. Despite fierce resistance and heavy casualties, by the end of the first day 5,000 Marines had made it ashore and carved out a 300m deep beachhead. Over the next two days, tanks and reinforcements made their way ashore and swept the defenders from their pillboxes, bunkers and other fortifications.
SSgt Norman T. Hatch and other combat cameraman assigned to 2d Marine Division shot first-hand video of the battle. Their footage became “With the Marines at Tarawa,” an Oscar-winning short documentary that captures the intensity of the battle, the heroism of the Marines, and the human cost of securing the island.

247 years ago today, the Continental Congress first issued the order for two battalions of Marines, sparking the recruiting process at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Since that day the Marine Corps has grown a great deal, lost the powdered wigs, and added helicopters, but the hard charging attitude and selfless service to country have stayed the same. To anyone who has proudly worn the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor: Happy 247th Birthday and Semper Fi!
“DOGGY” REVIEW - Marine Devil Dogs, veterans of the Bougainville fighting, were honored by a review of the canines now in training at Camp Lejeune, N.C., where the campaigners are enjoying a hard earned rest. “Colonel,” a bulldog mascot of the Marine War Dog Training Company, made his appearance dressed for the occasion. Other members of the reviewing party were former instructors and two of the handlers who were overseas with their dogs circa 1944.

the 1st Marine Division, under the command of MGen Oliver P. Smith, landed at Inchon and began the Inchon-Seoul campaign.
This action photo of the landing shows Marine 1stLt Baldomero Lopez leading his men over the seawall at Red Beach. Within minutes of this photograph, Lopez was shot while throwing a gr***de, which he covered with his body to shield his Marines. Lopez gallantly gave his life to save his men, for which he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
To learn more about Lopez’s bravery through our immersive experience of Inchon, visit our Korean War Gallery today: http://www.usmcmuseum.com/koreanwar.html
A doe, a dog, and a toddler walked into a photoshoot with a group of Marines.....okay, we don't know the punchline to this joke, but we sure are wondering how this group composition came about! Does one of these Marines have Disney-style wild animal taming abilities? Your guess is as good as ours!
We do know that this photograph in our artifact collection was taken at Camp Wesley Harris, a shooting range near Seabeck, in 1933. The range was named after a Marine who was killed in France during World War I.
