Hundreds…
No really, music therapists learn HUNDREDS of songs to use for their clients. This is LIVE music, typically played on guitar or piano, and sung by the music therapist.
Why do we need to know so many songs?
Our research shows that clients respond best to preferred music. This means that we have to be prepared with songs from multiple decades, genres, artists, everything!
But why does it have to be live?
This is where music therapy differs from using Spotify to lift your mood. As music therapists, we primarily use live music so that we can adjust the music to meet the needs of our clients. For example, if a music therapist is working with a client who appears to be over-stimulated, preferred music can still be use to maintain attention and engagement, but the music therapist can change the style of the song IN THE MOMENT to help calm the client to a more regulated state.
Sorry Spotify, but you can’t replace us!
We made it!
Throughout this week, music therapists have heard a ton of feedback like:
“Your job looks so fun!”
“How cool you get to sing to people for a living!”
“Wow, you sing songs all day to kids, thats special!”
While all of this is ABSOLUTELY TRUE, our work is incredibly demanding.
⭐️ Did you know that you can burn an average of 136 calories singing for one hour? Music therapists sing for 4-5 hours per day!
⭐️Did you know music therapists are trained to help clients process very heavy topics such as trauma, abuse, death and more? The emotional demands are high in this work!
⭐️Did you know that, outside of the sessions you see, music therapists are tasked with additional work responsibilities such as constantly learning new songs, documenting clinical session outcomes, sessions planning for future sessions, reviewing and updating client progress/goals, keeping up with current research and best practice.
The work of a music therapist is like an iceberg- what you see goes much deeper behind the scenes.
But you know…people do get this part right most of the time… we are SPECIAL! Don’t ever forget the value of the work you do, Music Therapists!

Grace, this team is better because of you! Thank you to your two years of dedicated work to our clients and our team! 💜
