The is the official page of the Department of Anthropology at Fresno State. Anthropology is concer What Is Anthropology?

Anthropology is concerned with everything that is human, in all parts of the world, both present and past. It is unique among the social sciences in the breadth of its scope. Most disciplines focus only on modern civilization or concentrate on single aspects of life, such as government or the economy. Anthropology is interested in all human societies and views life as a complexly integrated whole

Dear Anthro Students and Faculty,

Anthro/Chicano Studies alumnus Dr. Gilberto Lopez will speak on campus tomorrow, Oct. 26 at 12:30pm. Please join us, either in person or via Zoom. This will be an excellent example of social science applied to a pressing health disparity challenge. More information is below and attached.

"Pandemics, Cartoons, and Public Health: Culturally Tailored Communication for Latinx in the San Joaquin Valley"
Dr. Gilberto Lopez (ASU)
Tue. Oct. 26, 12:30pm
Science 147

This event will take place in person but we will have Zoom access as well: https://fresnostate.zoom.us/j/82334547342

Bio: Dr. Gilberto Lopez is a broadly trained social scientist whose work focuses on health inequities affecting Latinx communities across the U.S. He is director of the COVID Latino campaign (in partnership with UC Merced), which combines the arts with social/health sciences to create culturally-tailored messaging around COVID-19 for Latinx communities. His work also includes mental health, cancer survivorship, smoking, and other chronic diseases affecting Latinx communities. Dr. Lopez received his training from Harvard’s School of Public Health (ScD), Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (MPH), and Southern Methodist University (MA). He is a Fresno State Alum (’07) in Anthropology and Chicano Studies and a proud native of the Central Valley.

Talk info: Since the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic in March 2020, the U.S. has seen over 700,000 deaths. Latinx communities have seen a disproportionate burden of this disease as they are nearly 2x more likely to contract COVID-19, 4x more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19, and 3x more likely to die from COVID-19, compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Latino men lost an average 3.7 years off their lives in 2020. One important driver of these inequities is the lack of reliable and culturally tailored COVID-19 information for Latinx communities. The COVID Latino project aims to fill this void and provide Latinx communities with culturally-tailored, and empirically based, COVID-19 information by merging the arts with the social/health sciences. In his talk, Dr. Lopez will discuss the impetus, rationale, and process of developing culturally-tailored COVID-19 campaigns for Latinx.
