Many parents are taking their kids to college for the first time, last time, becoming empty nesters. Be blessed by this sage advice from So Very Whitney by Whitney Westbrook, Writer

Hey Midlifers, remember that you taught them well.

When you say see-you-at-fall-break.
When you part ways in the sticky August air.
When you watch the back of their head disappear into the crowd.

And later, remember that you taught them well.

When they tell you something questionable.
When they make a choice you don’t support.
When they own up to an impulsive decision.

Because you will remember you taught them well.

When you hear new confidence in their voice.
When you witness their brain find a new gear.
When you know their steps are sure-footed.

Remember, you taught them well.

When they grow into who they are meant to be.
When they change into a real Baby Adult.
When they give grace to others and themselves.

Remember that you taught them everything you know.

To brush their teeth twice daily.
To keep the gas tank at least a quarter full.
To look people in the eye when they speak.

Because you taught them everything you know.

To boil eggs for at least 10 minutes.
To walk with purpose when in public.
To keep the dog’s water bowl full of fresh water.

Everything.

To be an independent thinker.
To read and listen with a critical ear.
To speak as boldly as the occasion demands.

And trust God to fill in the gaps.
Because that’s how they grow.
It’s how we grow.

It’s how God grows us all, being everything we need.

It’s how we meet the moment.

Remember that you taught them this truth, too.

Save this one…such a beautiful reminder from Ullie Kaye Poetry

Instead of saying, "I know what it feels like", let's say "I cannot imagine your heartbreak".

Instead of saying, "You're strong, you'll get through this, let's say " You'll hurt, and I'll be here.

Instead of saying, "You look like you're doing well, Let's say, "How are you holding up today?"

Instead of saying, "Healing takes time", let's say "Healing has no timeline".

Instead of saying, "Everything happens for a reason, let's say "This must feel so terribly senseless right now".

And when there are no words to say at all, you don't need to try and find some. Love speaks in silences too.

No one explains it any more clearly…

For these words to have meaning you first need to listen carefully to the hurt party’s anger and pain. Otherwise saying the right words can just be an easy way out of a hard conversation.

Here's to the bridge-builders, the hand-holders, the light-bringers, those extraordinary souls wrapped in ordinary lives who quietly weave threads of humanity into an inhumane world. They are the unsung heroes in a world at war with itself. They are the whisperers of hope that peace is possible. Look for them in this present darkness. Light your candle with their flame. And then go. Build bridges. Hold hands. Bring light to a dark and desperate world. Be the hero you are looking for. Peace is possible. It begins with us.

A Kate Bowler blessing for all those brave enough to “see”…

A blessing for everyday empathy

Blessed are you, the sensitive one,
attuned to the feelings of others.
You couldn't turn it off if you tried.

Blessed are you with the
emotional bandwidth to hear hard things,
without fixing or minimizing or deflecting,
You know the gift of presence.

Blessed are you who
chooses to show up without judgment with
little gifts or small acts of practical help.
You know the gift of compassion.

Blessed are you, too,
when you are utterly exhausted
by other people’s problems.
(And actually now that we’re talking about it
it’s getting even more annoying.)
Your empathy is a precious gift
that deserves to be protected too.

Today, help me stand ready to hear
those divine whispers nudging me
to give compassion away.
Naturally. Freely.

And help me find those who,
to my surprise, want to pour back into me.
(Which, fine, you know I hate receiving.)

Love given and received,
without shame or embarrassment.
Because what else can a big-hearted person
do but learn to give and get?

Enjoy your “24 hours of absolutely everything”. Another gem from ashworth

Today won’t be a great day.
It wont be a bad day either.

Today will just be a ‘day’.

24 hours of absolutely everything.

Moments of joy, fear, uncertainty, pride, love.
Flashes of loss, happiness, connection and loneliness.

Moments swathed in every colour of the spectrum of emotion and humanity

Moment by moment.
Wrapped in hours, that make up one day.

JUST A DAY.

You’ve lived through plenty and you’ll live through many more.

So.

Do not entitle this 24 hour parcel as anything other than what it is…
A slice of life.

Go live it.

Moment by moment.

And be ready for them all.

As the school year ends for many, a beautiful reminder from the gifted

Dear Students,

Exams do not measure your intelligence, your worth or even your learning.
They measure your ability to digest and re-share information (often asked in trick-speak to test the way your brain processes), in tense conditions and under immediate and consistently drip-fed pressure.
We can’t all do that.
Doesn’t mean you didn’t pay attention, study hard or try your best.
And it certainly doesn’t mean you are not amazing, wonderful humans with so much to offer this parched world.
Chances are you would be able to answer correctly on the same subjects in a relaxed environment with straight-shooting questions.
The system is flawed, but that’s okay, you’ll do just fine when you find your thing, learning is lifelong.
Your time to shine will come.
And oh will you shine.
Just keep that self-worth intact.
That’s the qualification you really truly need.

A poignant offering for Mental Health Awareness Month…

Sadness came to tea last night
as she’s often done before
but I didn’t let her in this time
I stopped her at the door

“I’m off to meet with friends”, I said
“your timing isn’t right
I can’t allow your atmosphere
it’s not the place tonight”

but sadness wouldn’t take the hint
her manners lack finesse
her pace was slow and heavy
yet she kept up nonetheless

and even when I took my place
amongst my laughing friends
she squeezed herself right in-between
her boldness never ends

and I was sure my friends would see
this spectre at the feast
and somehow think me lesser
for inviting such a beast

but no, their warmth was undeterred
as if nothing was new
I think perhaps they know by now
I sometimes come as two

and even sadness seemed to glow
a lighter shade of grey
to know that she’s accepted
seemed to lighten up her day

so let your sad accompany you
don’t think her hard to bear
no need to face her all alone
just pull an extra chair.
