Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year's theme is "Mental Health Is a Universal Human Right."

What better day to launch our new Mind Body Life at Santa Fe College mental health campaign? Be sure to click on the campaign page and follow along for great advice on improving your mental and physical wellbeing or checkout resources on the website, https://ow.ly/gATy50PVbMu.

The Mind Body Life project was created with funding obtained by SF in collaboration with the CDC and the Florida Department of Health (DOH).

The Mind Body Life website is designed specifically for college students to address their unique mental health challenges in school and to remove common barriers preventing them from seeking or receiving care.

The goal of the website, social media posts, and other aspects of this broad initiative is to provide engaging and educational information that lowers the stigma around mental health by discussing the connection between mind, body, and life—and to promote access to local campus care and mental health services.

Anytime—day or night—help is just a click away. 💚

As a reminder, Santa Fe College students can reach the campus Counseling Center by emailing [email protected] or calling 352-395-5508. Student Life

August 28, 2023, 3:54 p.m. – Santa Fe College will be closed for all academic and business operations Tuesday, Aug. 29, and remain closed Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, in advance of Tropical Storm Idalia. This includes the Northwest Campus, all Centers, the Academy for Science and Technology, the SF Teaching Zoo, the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium, and the SF Gymnasium. Only employees who have received authorization from their division VP may report to any SF location until the college announces reopening.

The storm is expected to intensify rapidly, and for the latest information and projected track, you can monitor the storm through the National Hurricane Center(Opens in new window). Given the current forecast, the SF service district can expect strong tropical storm-force winds with the potential for hurricane-strength gusts. Heavy rains with potential flash flooding and the development of tornados are possible.

The college’s SF Alerts webpage will provide all official updated information concerning Hurricane Idalia or any other college alert issues. Get the latest news on the track of all storms through the National Hurricane Center’s webpage.

SF is Your Passport 03/02/2023

"I wanted to go to the University of Florida and chose to complete my first two years at Santa Fe College (SF). This was the best decision for me. What I liked about SF was that the small class sizes allowed me to dive in deeper to subjects and make strong connections with other students and professors.

Classes are important and studies are important. But I think for me, being in a new country equally important was meeting the right people and getting involved at the college. Extracurriculars were important to develop leadership skills, communication skills. Obviously for me college was a place to learn, but really for me was the people that I met and what I got involved in that helped me later on."

Making an SFID card takes about five minutes. To reduce your wait time, get your SFID card as soon as you register for classes. Waiting until next week could result in a wait of an hour or longer.

Uses of your SFID include access to the SF Fitness Center, Rec Room, utilizing library resources and checking in for tests at the Testing Center. In addition, the Regional Transit System (RTS) buses are free with use of your SFID and many local restaurants and retail shops offer a discount to students with proof of ID.

Radha Gomez, current SF student pursuing an Associate in Science in Biotech Lab Technology, sits down with us to answer a few questions about her experiences and reasons for choosing SF.

Q: How did you decide on your program of study at SF?
A: "As silly as it sounds, I admired Spider-Man in his pursuit of science. It was the manner in which he took joy from it, and the passion he had in pushing to do it. I saw that his life was difficult and lonely, but he was full of life when it came to his hero work and studies. When I saw the future he was carving out for himself, I began to see what I wanted my life to be. I want to be busy, challenged and always learning something new. When I started my program, I became certain that's what science could offer me."

Q: What are your aspirations for the future, long and/or short term?
A: "Short term, I want to graduate with my Biotech Lab Tech A.S. in Fall 2022, and then continue on with my bachelor's while working in Biotech. And long-term, I see myself pursuing my Ph.D. in a related field. And after that, conduct experiments in space."

“Growing up, I always wanted to go to college because it is something that not a lot of people in the Philippines can do and I always valued education. I moved to Newberry when I was 10 years old. Transitioning from the Philippines to being in the States was difficult, but I was able to adapt. Neither one of my parents went to college, but they supported me and would tell me to keep going and not to give up. The people of the Philippines are grateful for everything we have, we focus on family. I wouldn’t be in college without my family's support. They are the main reason I am here.”
