Ella Cline Shear, a dedicated elementary school teacher, graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 1935. The School of Education was renamed in her honor in 1998 due to her generous endowment. Mrs. Shear, who taught for 41 years, credited Geneseo for preparing her to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Her generosity continues to inspire future educators, making her a lasting role model.

👩‍🏫Meet Dr. Thea Yurkewecz-Stellato, Associate Professor in the Ella Cline Shear School of Education, specializing in reading and literacy. Dr. Yurkewecz-Stellato is a member of the SUNY Science of Reading Technical Advisory Group. The purpose of the advisory group is to examine teaching approaches based on reading science especially as related to educator preparation. Congratulations, Dr. Yurkewecz-Stellato. With a rich background in elementary education, Brown brings 15 years of valuable experience to her leadership role at Byron-Bergen Central Schools.
📖 Holding a BS in elementary education and an MSEd in literacy from SUNY Geneseo, Brown’s journey includes roles as a literacy coach, and teaching in third- and fourth-grade, and kindergarten classrooms. Are you waiting for your certification recommendation? Unfortunately the degree conferral process has been delayed multiple times.

Until degrees are conferred, we cannot submit your certification recommendation in TEACH. This might mean your application for certification remains in “Not Ready for Review” status for a few more weeks.

If you need a letter for a job offer or graduate school application that you are on track to receive your certification recommendation, please email Chelsea at [email protected]. Please do not contact any other office on campus about this issue.

While we're in a celebratory time of year, we also wanted to share that our own Dr. Abbey Baird walked across the stage this spring! Dr. Baird earned her EdD in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher University and also received the 2023 Exemplary Performance in Scholarship award. Help us congratulate Dr. Baird!
