Raptor Naturalist Camp. Wait what?

🌊 Lurch Makes a Splash at Raptor Naturalist Camp

"Raptor Naturalist Camp is a hit year after year. In this unique camp, kids get to work in groups to study and present on some of our beloved raptor ambassadors. Sadly, this winter, we lost a couple of our most patient raptor ambassadors to old age, but, as a result, two of our campers got the opportunity to work with Lurch, our turkey vulture!

When pairing the kids with birds, we consider both personality and strength to make sure that the pairing is successful. Lurch was the heaviest and most fickle of the birds the kids handled. While he’s known for his charm in front of crowds, Lurch can be weary about strangers handling him, which can result in a stinky situation: vulture vomit.

All of the campers did a wonderful job handling and presenting their birds despite their own challenges, but I was especially impressed by how calm, cool, and collected Lurch’s handlers were, even through some vomit."

PUEBLO—Pueblo Parks and Recreation is offering free admission to all four city pools Monday, July 29 through Wednesday, July 31. Pueblo is predicted to experience over 100-degree days and the free pools days encourage residents to cool down.

“We have multiple hot days coming up and we want the public to be able to cool down without the restriction or burden of cost at the city pools,” said Mayor of Pueblo Heather Graham. “With four locations across the city, hopefully many people take advantage of the free admission days with their family and friends to beat the heat.”

Pueblo Parks and Recreation has oversight of four pool locations which include Ray Aguilera Park, Mitchell Park, City Park and Mineral Palace Park. For a full list of amenities offered at each location, visit https://www.pueblo.us/616/Pools-Amenities. The spray parks and splash pads offered at various locations are also included in the free admission for all three days of July 29-31.

“We look forward to welcoming our community members free of charge for three days while Pueblo is experiencing high temperatures,” said Director of Pueblo Parks and Recreation Steven Meier. “Capacity at each of the pools varies and we have four pools in total, which will allow many people to be able to take advantage of this free opportunity.”

Ray Aguilera Park and Mitchell Park pools hours are from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily. City Park and Mineral Palace Park pools have two sessions offered from 12:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. and the second session from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. daily. All children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by a guardian or family member over the age 18.

Ray Aguilera Park Pool is located at 715 McCulley Avenue, Mitchell Park Pool is located at 1040 N. La Crosse Avenue, City Park Pool is located at 221 S. Parkside Lane and Mineral Palace Park Pool is located at 1602 N. Santa Fe Avenue.
