Perks of driving for work days :: farm stands and these beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Finally stopped at the Coulter Cafe on the way home too!
Cute little lunchies featuring sweet potato from Raw Roots farm just down the hill from where I was born, I can taste the familiar dirt.
Represented my school The National University of Natural Medicine twice this week as an alumni. What an honor! Working with the accrediting process and supporting new students as they enter the clinical field of nutrition brings back all the feelings.
Since graduation in 2021, so much has changed for me personally that it is a challenge to describe the impact. Working as a clinical nutritionist is a privilege-one that I take seriously. Respecting the counseling aspect of what we do in this field is one way I can guide those coming in as new professionals.
You never know what it is truly like to live in someone else’s body, so the cycle of respect prevails.
Thank you to Practice Better, which is way more than the software I use for clients. Today we heard all about weight inclusive nutrition through the lens of those working with GLP, GLP-1, and other medications. It is incredible to hear about the integrative work professionals are providing throughout the US, as well as in Canada within a different healthcare system.
As a nutritionist, I do not provide pharmaceutical advice. That’s between you and your doctor. It is my role to work with your medical advice to help you achieve best outcomes. Providing lifestyle recommendations and drug nutrient interaction education is a huge part of nutritional counseling.
Thanks to these providers for taking their time to educate us today on ways to work toward more inclusive and integrative healthcare spaces.

“Becoming one public university health system will ultimately benefit everyone, including those who have been historically underserved, and propel Oregon forward as a local and national leader in health, education and science.”
After months of collaborative work, Oregon Health & Science University has filed a robust, comprehensive Health Care Market Oversight, or HCMO, notice with the Oregon Health Authority that outlines their vision and shows how their plan for an integrated, full-service public university health system will improve the health and well-being of people in Oregon and beyond.

Thank you to the local grape 🍇 for hosting a wonderful evening of learning! You can see here the stack of books I recommend on the topic, we specifically talked a lot last night about ideas covered in, ‘The Human Superorganism,’ by Rodney Dietert, PhD. For those that want to dive deeper into this topic, and specifically learn a bit more about the brain health side of things: join me in October for a small group workshop right here in Mariposa!
Thank you so much for joining.
In the midst of so much happening in the world, both locally and globally, I am continually grateful to believe in the work I do everyday.
Pictured here is me wrapping up a series of teaching and events across the Sierra Nevada foothill regions - I am in awe of the energy folks bring when we talk about food as medicine. Someone always has a garden, others have a story of their grandparents, and all of us can relate to the life of a mountain person because it’s something we have chosen.
Cheers to the next steps of learning together, and stay tuned for a fun microbiome teaching coming up at the in beautiful downtown Mariposa, California this upcoming Monday 9/23 at 5:30 pm.
I’m honored to be testifying before Congress on September 18th at 2:00 PM ET, alongside Rep. Vern Buchanan, to discuss one of the most pressing issues we face—rising healthcare costs and the burden of chronic disease. We’ll dive into how investing in preventive care, like food as medicine, can reshape the future of healthcare in America.
You can watch via this link if you can't make it in person: https://bit.ly/2VRuYvA
Thank you to the Mariposa Senior Activity Center for letting us trash your dining room for a cooking demo again! It’s hard to teach food as medicine without getting good and messy. The recipe was pulled from the one and only book, ‘Food As Medicine Everyday’.
Lots more cooking and health education classes to come-although I am only at the Senior Center once a quarter now, I also have small group workshops sprinkled throughout the Fall and Winter.
If you’d like to be included on my email list, you will get the first invites, if interested please send your address over and you’ll start hearing from me on the regular.

What do you want to know about Food Safety?
In our region, as across California, we experience regular power outages which often result in a devastating loss of food. Living with climate change in the West means we all need to level up when it comes to storing and securing our precious foods & seeds. The senior citizens across Mariposa, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and Amador counties have chosen this topic as a critical concern.
So they have asked me to provide some education!
Thoughts? Stories? Harrowing efforts to save foods?
I’d love to hear about it here in the comments, or please join us on Friday in person for a live conversation.
Looking for nutritional advice? Here in the great state of California, anyone can talk about nutrition, anyone. So I recommend looking for either an RD(N) or a CNS (that’s me!) who has had the focused training to apply nutrition in a medical setting.
We work hard to maintain our credentials and continue to advocate for food to remain a top priority in medical care - this is for your health.
The American Nutrition Association board (the BCNS) that oversees my credential is continuing to push for legislative changes and we are making progress.
My school National University of Natural Medicine has encouraged this path of credentialing in order to continue to gain the respect of the wider world of healthcare professionals.
And I respect the heck out of the science, and I’ll continue this rigorous path as long as we can all work together.
In health,
Your nutritionist

Good morning, August
Everyone has a different body, right? While some may see saturated fat, sugar, and cholesterol. I can see the benefits of Vitamins D & C, anthocyanins, a complete protein, unsaturated and saturated fats, oleic acid, quercetin, etc.
My advice: beware of a ‘one size fits all’ approach to nutrition, because ‘size’ is not a medical term anyway.
Major score today after visiting with the seniors! Turns out Groveland has a beautiful non profit that receives thousands of donations every year. I had the pleasure of touring their facility today to look at their food service operations ⛑ decided to stay for the sewing club afterward.
This year I have had the honor to reach out and work with multiple senior centers in our region, and soon I’ll be seeing even more. We all know the food services are extraordinarily solid, through Covid lockdown, through fires, they feed people-anyone who walks in the door. I met a manager who has volunteered for 10 years (!) even setting up shop in the parking lot for 2 of those years to feed people.
There’s so much more than food happening here folks, it’s a kind of rebuilding of the social infrastructure that has been lost somewhere along the food chain. These are our elders, and they cherish the hell out of an opportunity to share space with one another. And gosh, wouldn’t you give anything for a chance to share a table with your own elders?
It’s these tiny, precious moments, that are often so short.
Incredible find today on a local creek, just when I thought all the elderberries were long gone. Just when I felt the deep need to remember to use the medicine that is right in front of me. It takes big patience to help in certain contexts, some say we work for changes that will never be seen in our lifetime.
I know I am not the first to feel this way, so today we harvest.
Got a thank you card: a previous client sent a card and said thank you for helping me, “get back to being me.”
Now that’s the goal 🗣
Attention followers, you may have noticed a resurgence of food photos, and yes I am happily following my passion teaching culinary nutrition. At the same time, I continue to offer Clinical Nutrition, offering a deep dive into personalized care. This involves reviewing past histories, genetics, and environmental factors that are likely influencing your health. We develop therapeutic food plans, and work closely with medication interactions, as well as multiple layers of prevention. Every body is different, so I can’t spell out what clinical nutrition looks like for you, yet. Each person that I have worked with over the years is completely unique, and gets an entirely individualized plan. My heart is all in this work, and my brain is continually developing ways to be more helpful. With each client I practice a remembrance of how many steps I have taken with my own nutrition - how food has helped heal much more than just nausea and allergy mitigation - and that food is a fundamental human right. Period.
Thank you to the American Nutrition Association for governing our work and protecting the future of clinical nutrition.
