Join us on Monday May 27th.

Lieutenant Michael Murphy, of Patchogue, New York, was killed in action in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings on June 28, 2005. This incident has been popularized by the book & subsequent movie “Lone Survivor.”

Murphy was the commander of a four-man reconnaissance team on a mission to kill or capture a top Taliban leader.

Dropped off by helicopter in a remote, mountainous area of eastern Afghanistan, Murphy’s team was surrounded and attacked by Taliban fighters.
Murphy, two members of his team, & sixteen U.S. military personnel aboard a Chinook helicopter that was shot down during the intense fight were killed.

Mike Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions that day, placing himself in the open and exposed to enemy fire in order to make a satellite phone call to get the quick reaction force (QRF) to help save his teammates.

By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit and inspirational devotion to his men in the face of certain death, Lt. Murphy was able to relay the position of his unit, an act that ultimately led to the rescue of
Marcus Luttrell and the recovery of the remains of the three who were killed in the battle.

Murph, as he was known to his friends, loved to do this workout, which he called “body armor”.

The origins of one of the more infamous workouts in CrossFit!

Today marks the 27th anniversary of Hurricane Fran; on the evening of September 5th, 1996, at 830PM, Hurricane Fran made landfall near Bald Head Island. It left devastating impacts on NC; Fran developed from a Tropical wave that came off Africa and tracked across the Atlantic Ocean. Fran made landfall near Bald Head Island as a Cat 3 Hurricane with winds of 115MPH. Fran caused catastrophic damage and flooding; it was responsible for 26 deaths and was the most expensive natural disaster in NC ever at the time. Hurricane Fran brought impacts far inland with hurricane-force wind gusts into Raleigh. It remains one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit NC.

This afternoon we are honoring the late Tom Jones- head coach, friend, and mentor. You are welcome to come to the memorial at 2pm here at the gym and show your respect. He will be missed.
