Summer research begins on Monday! It is going to be a great summer.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to Dins Day! We got the preliminary numbers for donations to chemistry and our total is $20,000. The generosity of our alumni and friends is so wonderful. Of all the departments, chemistry came in second only to the music department in terms of total funds contributed...those musicians need new pianos, we need new chemicals and equipment for our research students!

Hi This is Laura Wright. I donated on Dins Day (aka Paladins Day) to the chemistry C-FABB fund. This endowment will grow over the years to support summer research fellowships for our majors. This makes my gift last longer. For immediate help for the department the Chemistry Special Needs fund will help cover the cost of supplies for the summer research program. Our grants cover research group specific supplies, but they don't always cover the cost of gas cylinder rental, bulk solvents, and liquid nitrogen for our NMRs. The Special Needs Chemistry fund helps us meet these other types of research expenses. If this is a year you are able to help we will be thankful. If this is not in your budget this time we still are grateful for your emotional support through the years! Happy Last Day of Classes and Happy Dins Day!

From the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
We regret to inform you that Dr. Tony Arrington, William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Chemistry Emeritus, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

After completing his undergraduate Chemistry degree summa cm laude at Furman, Tony went on to pursue his master’s degree and later his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Dr. Arrington accepted a one-year faculty appointment at Furman, and following a two-year research position in San Francisco, joined the Furman faculty full time in 1967. His tenure included chairing the Chemistry department from 1975-1981, serving as faculty chair, and participating effectively in numerous university initiatives and committees.

Dr. Arrington was known for his leadership in promoting the importance of research at Furman. From 1991-2003, Dr. Arrington conducted summer research trips with 62 Furman students to Los Alamos, New Mexico, working with well-known staff scientists. In 1979, Tony received the Alester G. Furman Jr. and Janie Earle Furman Meritorious Teaching Award. Attesting to his impact, a student wrote, “Dr. Arrington taught me that true success is measured not just by grades or academic degrees, but by sincerity, self-discipline, and strength of character.”
Dr. Arrington inspired and served as a mentor for generations of students. As one wrote, “He was like a tour guide for both chemistry and life in general.” Tony’s remarkable influence extended to his colleagues as he invested in mentoring young faculty, and he was known for his kindness throughout the university.

In 2001, Dr. Arrington’s work was acknowledged with an appointment as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He retired in 2008.

Dr. Arrington’s legacy at Furman will continue, though he will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held in the Charles E. Daniel Memorial Chapel at Furman on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service in the Chapel Garden Room. A private interment will be held at First Baptist Church of Greenville.

Memorial gifts may be made to “The Furman Advantage”, Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613.
