Today is National Play Monopoly Day!

Monopoly was invented in 1903 by, ironically, anti-monopolist Lizzie Magie. It was meant as an educational tool to show the dangers of allowing monopolies to flourish, and to explain the single tax theory of economics.
The Parker Brothers acquired the patent from Magie for $500 and began marketing the game in 1935. In WWII, British Intelligence commissioned custom Monopoly games that were distributed to prisoners of war by ‘charities. Those special games contained hidden maps, money, and even escape tools!
Many ‘special editions’ have been released over the years, and Monopoly is estimated to have been played by over one billion people!

While we are obsessed with the amazing waterfall trails in the Columbia River Gorge, you can celebrate National Take A Hike Day much closer to home! The Pittock Mansion Hike is a beautiful, not-too-strenuous hike that starts at the Macleay Park trailhead and winds through Forest Park, passing The Witches Castle, old growth forest, and ends at the Pittock Mansion, where you are free to wander around the impressive grounds before hiking back.
