What an incredible time we had at the AFOP 2023 Conference! From attending amazing workshops to connecting with fellow professionals, it was an unforgettable journey of learning and networking.

Throughout the conference, there were numerous informative sessions and workshops. These sessions provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting farmworkers and the strategies being employed to address them. The Association of Farmworkers Opportunity Program National conference in San Diego was not only educational but also an important platform for advocacy. The event served as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure that farmworkers have opportunities for advancement.

¡Qué tiempo tan increíble pasamos en la Conferencia AFOP 2023! Desde asistir a increíbles talleres hasta conectar con otros profesionales, fue un viaje inolvidable de aprendizaje y de establecer contactos con otros compañeros en esta profesión.

A lo largo de la conferencia, hubo numerosas sesiones informativas y talleres. Estas sesiones brindaron a los asistentes una comprensión integral de los problemas que afectan a los trabajadores agrícolas y las estrategias que se emplean para abordarlos. La conferencia nacional del Programa de Oportunidades de la Asociación de Trabajadores Agrícolas en San Diego no solo fue educativa sino también una plataforma importante para la promoción. El evento sirvió como recordatorio del trabajo continuo que debe realizarse para garantizar que los trabajadores agrícolas tengan oportunidades de avance.

We are proud to introduce some of the remarkable members of our OHDC team who have been hard at work in Woodburn, Hermiston, and Gresham, Oregon. They recently conducted an essential Health and Safety Training program for our dedicated farmworkers in these regions.

One of the key components of this training is the Worker Protection Standard (WPS), which is designed to safeguard the health and well-being of our farmworkers. WPS training equips our team with the knowledge and tools needed to handle pesticides safely, reducing health risks and ensuring a safer work environment. We are committed to ensuring that our workers have the resources they need to protect themselves while contributing to our agricultural communities.

Estamos orgullosos de presentarles a algunos de los miembros destacados de nuestro equipo OHDC que han trabajado duramente en Woodburn, Hermiston, y Gresham, Oregon. Recientemente llevaron a cabo un programa esencial de capacitación en salud y seguridad para nuestros dedicados trabajadores agrícolas en estas regiones.

Uno de los componentes clave de esta capacitación es el Estándar de Protección al Trabajador (WPS), que está diseñado para salvaguardar la salud y el bienestar de nuestros trabajadores agrícolas. La capacitación de WPS equipa a nuestro equipo con el conocimiento y las herramientas necesarias para manipular pesticidas de manera segura, reduciendo los riesgos para la salud y garantizando un ambiente de trabajo más seguro. La capacitación fue un evento importante que tuvo como objetivo mejorar nuestra comprensión del programa Workforce, permitiéndonos servir mejor a las comunidades de trabajadores agrícolas en todo Oregón. A través de una agenda integral que abarca diversos temas, fomentamos un ambiente de colaboración e intercambio de conocimientos. La oportunidad de conectarse con nuestro personal en persona y participar en una nueva capacitación resultó ser inmensamente beneficiosa. ¡Esperamos con entusiasmo nuestro próximo entrenamiento!

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting a National Farmworker Jobs Program training in Bend, Oregon. The training was a significant event that aimed to enhance our understanding of the Workforce program, enabling us to better serve the farmworker communities across Oregon. Through a comprehensive agenda covering various topics, we fostered an environment of collaboration and knowledge sharing. The opportunity to connect with our staff in person and engage in fresh training proved to be immensely beneficial. We look forward to our next training!

Congratulations to Jacklyn Castellanos, a student from Washington, on being awarded the Larry B. Sanchez Memorial Scholarship 2023!

Jacklyn is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Heritage University and is passionate about giving back to her community. She is the first in her family to attend college, and she credits her parents' hard work and sacrifice for her success. Jacklyn's parents immigrated from Mexico and worked in agriculture for over 27 years. They instilled in her a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility.

Jacklyn is grateful for the scholarship, which will help her pay for her tuition and other expenses. She is excited to start her nursing career and make a difference in the lives of others.
Jacklyn is particularly interested in working with underserved communities. She believes that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their background.

We wish Jacklyn all the best in her studies and her future career!

Many farmworkers will be excluded from this holiday as they will continue to work long hours on this day. We are grateful for the tireless effort farmworkers contribute to ensure food is on our table. Their labor is essential to our economy and our way of life. Thank you, Farmworkers, for your essential and irreplaceable work on Labor Day!
