Join Us in Making a Difference for Our Children

As Kiwanians, our mission is to serve and make a lasting impact in the lives of our . Sadly, 63% of children in our community rely on free and reduced breakfast and lunch at school, but many still go hungry at home. Even with SNAP and WIC benefits, too many kids are left without enough food.

This Thursday, October 17, 2024, the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown, MD will be gathering at Girls Inc. of Washington County to make sandwiches for these children. For some, this could be their only evening meal.

Please join us as we lend a helping hand and show our community’s children they are not forgotten. Every sandwich makes a difference!

Toys for Tots has been delivering joy to children for over 75 years—since its founding in 1947 by the U.S. Marine Corps! Each year, they collect millions of toys to ensure kids in need, from infants to 12 years old, have a brighter holiday.

Our annual Kiwanis Cares Essential Items Drive has wrapped up, and we’re thrilled about the results! On August 22nd at Girls Inc., after weeks of dedicated planning and shopping, we’re ready to pack care boxes filled with essential items for all **41 area schools**. Each box is thoughtfully tailored to meet the unique needs of our students, ensuring they have the support they need to succeed.

A huge thank you to our incredible members, community partners, and volunteers for making this possible! Your generosity is truly making a difference in the lives of our children.

We are thrilled to host Marquiela Gantt, the Director of Operations for the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, as our guest speaker. She will share insights about the organization's crucial mission to empower youth to reach their full potential. What began as a simple initiative in 1941 has become a comprehensive youth development program, equipping both boys and girls to become impactful citizens and change-makers in their . Since its inception, the Boys and Girls Club has tripled the number of youth served and expanded from one location to several across Washington County. On Thursday, May 23rd, we are pleased to welcome Carsten Ahrens, guest speaker from Horizon Goodwill Industries. Carsten will be sharing information about Goodwill's Youth Shelter, which offers housing navigation and assistance for young adults in our community who are experiencing homelessness. The Hagerstown shelter is specifically designed to serve young adults experiencing homelessness. While at the shelter, young adults are connected to essential services and employment opportunities that will help them find housing and achieve financial stability. We are eager to learn more about the program and explore how Kiwanis can support them.

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a classic and iconic food that is loved by many. However, it's important to remember that for some children in Washington County, it may be more than just a tasty treat. In fact, 64% of in the county receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch through the school system, and for many of them, this sandwich may be their only meal for the evening. Even though some children do receive SNAP and WIC benefits, they still may not have enough food to eat.

To help out, the Kiwanis Club will be making sandwiches for children at the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, Pangborn Elementary School, and the Robert W Johnson Community Center, on Thursday, April 25th. Join us at Girls Inc. of Washington County at 12:15 pm and help make a difference in the lives of our children. You will be happy you did! See you there!
