Juliana Michelbrink, a senior English Education major at PNW and member of English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta, has had her original poem, “Unforgotten Fragments,” accepted for the society’s Centennial Convention in St. Louis in 2024. Her poem was accepted in the category of the Stemmler/Dennis LGBTQ Awards and is an original poem that “reflects upon the life and works of the ancient poet Sappho while making connections to love and the struggles that LGBTQ+ people may face when openly expressing their love,” says Michelbrink. “It draws inspiration from the unfortunate history of Sappho’s works to speak upon the challenges that persist for LGBTQ+ women in today’s world.”
Skyler Hosfeld, graduate student in history (and Writing Center tutor!) presented her research on Women as Instruments of Change in SouthEast Chicago from 1945-1960 at the Annual Meeting of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences on October 6th. Skyler conducted primary source research at the SouthEast Chicago Historical Society to investigate the ways women responded to changes in industry and environment post World War II. Skyler conducted this research as part of a Student Research Scholar Grant with Assistant Professor of Practice Steffanie Triller.
Writing Center tutors Clare Marcotte and Alex Vrbanoff, along with Writing Center Graduate Assistant Miranda Sims and Writing Center Director Steffanie Triller attended the annual conference of the International Writing Centers Association in Baltimore, Maryland, where they presented “How to be a Sidekick with the Most Inclusive Toolbelt,” a presentation that reported on ongoing research in the PNW Writing Center and considered the implications of Critical Pedagogy and Person-Centered Counseling for writing center work. This ongoing inclusivity work in the PNW Writing Center is happening with the support of multiple Student Research Scholar Grants from the Department of English and World Languages.
