Student Teacher Highlight:
HSMS is thrilled to host a former Ram this fall as she prepares for her future career in education! Ms. Josephine Johnston graduated from HSHS in 2020 and is currently completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical & Health Education at Northern Michigan University. She will be student teaching this fall with Mr. Geyer in his health and PE classes in grades 5-8.
Ms. Johnston is currently working as a physical trainer and assistant group fitness coach at Bay Tennis and Fitness, so you may have seen her around. She is excited to be part of the Ram family and looks forward to this learning experience.
Please join us in welcoming Ms. Johnston to our team!
New Staff Highlight:
We are excited to welcome Mrs. Kylie Ralph to our middle school team! Mrs. Ralph holds degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education from Grand Valley State University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Learning Disabilities at GVSU. This year she will be teaching special education classes as well as co-teaching English Language Arts in grades 6-8.
Mrs. Ralph recently moved to Northern Michigan with her husband, who teaches PE in the area. In her free time she loves playing pickleball, road biking, crafting, directing theatrical productions, and soaking up the beauty of Lake Michigan.
Mrs. Ralph is excited for the school year and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with her students and their families. If you see her around, don’t hesitate to say hello. She’s eager to meet everyone in the community!
Welcome to the team, Mrs. Ralph!
New Staff Highlight:
We are excited to welcome a Ram alum to our fifth grade teaching staff! Ms. Caitlin Williams graduated from HSHS in 2020 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a concentration in mathematics from Northern Michigan University.

She has a passion for helping students succeed and watching them grow, and she’s excited to be teaching fifth grade math and ELA at HSMS. When she’s not in school, Ms. Williams loves to go on adventures and spend time with family and friends. This fall, Ms. Williams is getting married and will become Mrs. Hoffman. Help put a new book into a child’s hands!
In a continued effort to support literacy, give back to our area, offer resources for local schools and educators, and encourage Harbor Springs families to see what our little bookstore is able to provide, Between the Covers is launching its
SUMMER READING BOOK BONANZA!
Our goal for 2024 is to provide every Harbor Springs student in grades preK through 8th with a book to read this summer.
Some classes will visit the bookstore, while others may elect to have a presentation right in their own classrooms. Middle school students will get to embark on a new series of their choosing.
Titles will be selected by Between the Covers' booksellers and will focus on authors and books that may be unfamiliar to most students and teachers. They will be newly-released titles of high interest and catered to each student's grade level.
While we firmly believe it is part of our mission as an indie bookstore to share a love of reading, we cannot take on the financial burden alone. This is when we turn to you—our friends and readers and customers.
We have had a great response but are extending the deadline to make this program a reality for more students!
Summer Reading Book Bonanza:
•Donations may be made in increments of $25.00.
•You may sponsor a particular grade level (preK-8th) or designate an area of most need.
•Between the Covers is not a nonprofit organization. Your donation is NOT tax deductible.
•Donations may be made in-store or by phone.
Thank you for your support in helping us to put good books into the hands of good young readers!
