Brothers and sisters, welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year! Hicksville Congress of Teachers President Corey Cohn delivering his opening address to membership at Superintendent’s Conference day. In addition to talking about opportunities for teachers to volunteer over the coming months, Corey spoke to being “stronger, together,” a unifying message meant to mobilize teachers towards a common goal in the coming months.

Jericho Cares is as an organization that helps those in need within a 20 mile radius of Jericho. This event was geared to helping back to school with giving underprivileged students brand new sneakers, clothes, books, water bottles, and backpacks filled with school supplies. Thanks to Katelyn Slawitsky for getting the HCT involved and Katie Coleman for coming out and helping Corey, Kyrstin and Rob.

A special thanks to some OCR teachers and their kids for helping to pack up the backpacks with school supplies! Liz Careccia, her daughter Valentina, Jenn McEvoy, Danielle Baker and her kids Sarah, Sammi, and Jacob, Gloria Cruz, Jill Barber and her son Peter!

Thank you to our members for participating in National Night Out! This event takes place all over the country, and our location was at Bethpage High School with other participants from the Hicksville community. The HCT donated books to the children of the community.

As many of you know, one of our Hicksville families had a devastating fire. The student is in 3rd grade. The family is need of Woman's Large, Men's Small, Men's Large and Men's XL clothing. (Shorts and t-shirts preferred since its the summer) The family could also use towels. All donations can be dropped off to Lee Avenue school.

Today, HCT presented $200 ALDI gift cards to Family Partnership Specialist Maritza Quintero for use in the new Hicksville Food Pantry at Old Country Road School. Special thank you to OCR Social Worker Monica Aber for spearheading this program and for securing donations from local supermarkets to stock pantry shelves. Quintero thanked our membership, adding that Summer is an especially difficult time for food insecure families since students do not have access to free school breakfast and lunch.

NYSUT RA Day 2 - Listened to many great speakers in the education community. We voted on important resolutions to help set NYSUT’s legislative agenda for the upcoming year. Also got to wish a happy 75th birthday to Mr. Vote Cope himself, Jeff Zuckerman!
