Today is Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day. On July 31, 1843 Admiral Richard Thomas of the British Royal Navy returned the rule of the Hawaiian Kingdom to its proper Constitutional Sovereign, King Kamehameha III, at what is now known as Thomas Square in Honolulu. Missionary Edwin O. Hall composed a “Restoration Anthem” to celebrate the occasion. It was printed in The Seaman’s Friend and Temperance Advocate in the August 11, 1843 edition. In that same edition is a proclamation from Admiral Thomas as well as a printed copy of the agreement between Admiral Thomas and King Kamehameha III.
