Way to go, Puns! Brennan Tomas '28 and Austin McIntosh '28 and their O‘ahu teammates represented the West Region at the Little League World Series this summer.
Punahou will soon receive a special sculpture by renowned Polynesian master woodworker Tonu Shane. This humpback whale carving, significant as an aumakua and representing the connection between Hawai‘i and Alaska, is crafted from the wood of a 1,000-year-old Alaskan yellow cedar log with a rich history. The project, supported by Jon Larson’s '59 family foundation, aims to bring awareness to indigenous cultural traditions, values and environmental issues. The Himalayan Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan was the destination for a group of seniors this summer, who took part in environmental-based service projects and learned about Buddhism’s role in daily life and education.
The trip included visiting the giant Dordenma Buddha, planting trees, exploring temples, archery, school visits, home stays and a visit to Chelela Pass, the highest drivable point in Bhutan.
A group of seniors traveled to the Netherlands for their Senior Capstone this summer, experiencing Amsterdam and Rotterdam like natives by biking around town, visiting farmers markets and enjoying transportation via canal.
New this year, the trip centered on sustainable and livable cities in partnership with the Netherlands’ Aspire Institute. Students visited sustainable housing developments, participated in gardening and took part in a trash cleanup. The trip highlighted the Netherlands as one of the most well-designed and sustainable countries per capita.

Because environmental history is so intersectional – it deals with almost every aspect of human life – it is an optimal field for teaching students about the complexities of the world and the need to look for multiple stories to explain any given topic. The Clarence T.C. Ching PUEO (Partnerships in Unlimited Educational Opportunities) Program was established in 2005 through a partnership with HIDOE. PUEO offers a variety of engaging educational activities for its scholars, from fourth grade and above.
