On Saturday our English Language Learner Manager, Law Chavez, recently organized a Christmas in July Party for ELL students and learners from the Digital Literacy program. 🎄🏖️The event provided a great opportunity for individuals to interact, especially since most had not previously met due to the classes being held virtually. 😁
This summer, the Bookmobile visited six schools in the Waipahu/Pearl City Complex. 🚎📚 The Bookmobile provided free books, read-aloud sessions, and activities for the students. It was wonderful to see both new and familiar faces, and we were touched by the sweet thank-you messages we received. 😊

Happy National Bookmobile Day! 🥳 Hawaii Literacy’s Bookmobile Program began in 2001. Since then, we’ve served tens of thousands of keiki and their ‘ohana by providing access to free books and educational materials in underserved communities across Oahu and S. Kona. 🚎📚

The Bookmobiles provide free access to books for keiki and their ohana at various after-school programs, affordable housing programs, transitional housing, and shelters. Staff and volunteers also facilitate read-alouds and literacy-related activities which many of the keiki enjoy. 😁✏️📚🚎
Bookmobiles are an essential tool in making reading accessible. 🚎📚Our Bookmobiles provide a wide range of books suitable for children of all ages, as well as a selection for adults to build their home libraries. We hope that there is a book on our shelves that will instill a love for reading and storytelling in everyone who visit. 📖💫

Summer recap with the Bookmobile 🚍📚🌞 This summer, we had the opportunity to visit 12 DOE schools in the Waipahu-Pearl City Complex. The Bookmobile was able to provide free books, literacy activities, read-aloud and lessons for the students. It was great to see new and familiar faces during our visits!😃

This summer, in addition to visiting 12 DOE elementary schools our Bookmobiles are also serving 5 Summer Fun sites along the Waiʻanae-Nanakuli Coast. ☀️
This week, staff facilitated discussions that centerered our love for our communties, our Hawaiʻi. We also taught keiki and ʻōpio the song Hawaiʻi Aloha, which was written by a man who was not born here but was able to capture and voice this sentiment. Staff brought ukuleles and invited participants to play them and learn some cords. 🎶
Mahalo to the ladies of the Executive Women International Honolulu Chapter for volunteering with us this past Saturday! Karen and Shelly graciously helped to assemble literacy activities and prepped our brand new books for distribution. 💙
In addition to books, the Bookmobile also gifts educational activities to families to enjoy at home. We believe that parents are their children's first and best teachers and that family support can help any parent, regardless of literacy level, help their child succeed. 🎉

Today, we read “Alohasaurus” by Vera Arita. Students and teachers enjoyed it so much that they requested their own copies to check out. 🎉
The Bookmobile attended ’s Resource Fair over the weekend. We met families from Kalihi, Makiki and of course Waipahu! Not only did visitors receive free books for themselves and their keiki, but they also learned about our other programs.
During the school year, the Bookmobile is at Safe Haven every 1st & 3rd Fridays (2:30pm-3:30pm). However, our English Language Learner Program holds classes there every Wednesdays & Fridays (9am-12:30pm).
Wednesdays - for Marshallese speakers.
Fridays - for Chuukese speakers.

On May 27th, the Bookmobile will be at the West Oahu Christian Church Resource Fair from 10am-3pm. 📚

We are seeking a caring and reliable person who is interested in summer part-time work with the Bookmobile Program from June 1-July 31, 2023. Current service routes include sites in Waipahu, Pearl City, Ewa and Honolulu - Monday to Friday.
Hours will range from 15-18 hrs per week. We are seeking someone that has availability Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 3:30pm on select days.
Were you at the Filipino Fiesta at this weekend? Unfortunately, our Bookmobile team was not able to return this year BUT we did drop off 160 brand new children’s books to be distributed at the event by volunteers. Salamat Fil4Kids for partnering with us!
On Saturday, the Bookmobile participated in Wahiawa’s Pineapple Festival for the very first time. We were wonderfully placed next to the stage and got to enjoy the awesome line up for entertainment. 352 keiki and adults stopped by to visit us and we were able to gift 250 books and 37 comprehension spinners to families. Mahalo for having us! 😄💙📚

Last month, Hawaii Literacy participated and celebrated Marshallese Education Day at Ke’elikolani Middle School recognizing the amazing accomplishments of the students and the community.
Our English Language Learner Program and Family Literacy Libraries provided attendees with information about our organization and our five programs.
We had such a great time seeing familiar faces and making new connections!
