⭐️ Board Member Spotlight: Jessica Darling ⭐️

Meet Jess, a member of SEND's board who first became involved with us as a representative of the Fountain Square Alliance. Jess currently works for the IU School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics, where she manages their fellowship program.

In our recent Quarterly Newsletter Jessica reflected on her experience serving on SEND's board saying, "I joined [the board] in order to be a more knowledgeable and active member in my neighborhood. I am passionate about affordable housing and each month SEND convenes a housing committee meeting with a robust agenda."

"Recently we hosted Andrea Miller, Senior Planner for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO), to present a recap of the recently published Central Indiana Housing Study. The study highlights the many communities in central Indiana where affordable housing is needed as well as ways that communities can work together to combat this ever growing problem," she added.

As Chair of the Housing Committee, Jessica also reflected on a project she's been involved with that she's particularly passionate about. "Our partnership with UpHoldings to develop Hanna Commons is a spectacular example of SEND doing something impactful in the community. Hanna Commons is a new 55-unit housing complex offering permanent supportive housing — a facility not only providing housing assistance but including wrap-around supportive services such as case management, mental health care and substance abuse treatment. They currently boast a 100% occupancy rate with a growing waiting list. I hope this housing development will serve as a model for future opportunities on the southeast side."

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we're spotlighting the The Philippine Cultural Community Center. During this year's Six Days with SEND celebration, we hosted a bus tour of local public art in Southeast Indy, guided by Julia Muney Moore, Director of Public Art at Indy Arts Council.

A highlight of the tour was our visit to the Center, where we admired a beautiful mural by Andrea Haydon of Studio Haydon, LLC showcasing notable Filipino leaders. This artwork is a powerful tribute to the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of the Filipino Community in Indianapolis.

Public Art plays a crucial role in celebrating diversity, fostering community pride, and enhancing social well-being. We're grateful to everyone who joined us on this inspiring tour and to the artists who bring these important stories to life.
